Looking for rigging line for custom model ship

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I have a custom model ship (it is not from a kit).  It was built by my great grandfather.  I am looking to restore the ship (some of the rigging has come undone) and need certain sizes and colors and having a heck of a time trying to source it.  I am looking for the following:

1mm diameter brown rigging

2mm diameter brown rigging

I am open to taking white thread or some material and dipping it in stain to get the right color if necessary.  I have looked at quite a few model sites but have thus far been unable to find what I need.  Does anyone have an idea on where I should look?  I am open to making it (finding the right thread or material) myself if necessary.

thanks

Mike Riley

2 mm is pretty large and sounds like it might be for anchor cable or shrouds on a really big model?

Mike what is the scale of the build???

You may want to establish that then verify you want 2mm. As George says the sounds pretty big.

You may get a rough idea of the scale by measuring the width of the deck planks, that is assuming they are to scale or near scale.  Or by the base dia of the main mast.

George,

You are correct.  The model itself is quite large.  Height is 41 1/2" and the length is 48".  The width is about 4 or 5" at the base but the sails are about 9."  You are also correct about the 2mm thread that is for the shroud.  I believe the ship is a galleon.  I have not been able to find any images that it matches up with perfectly.  I think some creative license was used when the ship was built.  I do have some good images of it that I can post, but I don't have them at the moment.

Yes pictures will definitely help in getting her identified, and hopefully the scale the cables have to be.

Tom,

Well, I say I want 2mm size only because I actually measured using calipers the diameter of the thread/string.  So I am trying to get that exact size.  So measuring the rigging with calipers I got 2.03mm or .080 inch diameter for the larger rigging and 1.08mm or .042 inch diameter for the smaller rigging.  I measured the main large sail and got 12 1/2 inch width at the top and 14 1/2 inch width at the bottom of the sail.  I apologize, but I am not familiar with what you meant regarding the diameter of the sail.  Regarding the deck planks there actually are not any deck planks on the ship.  It is a single piece of wood for the deck.  Like I mentioned creative license was used in building this ship.  It is not extremely detailed that you see in most model ship projects.

thanks

I actually found the images.  Here are some good photos of the 2mm rigging that I am looking for:

You can see the 2mm rigging on the right in both photos.

Here are some good images of the entire ship:

This shows the lack of deck planks and again shows the 2mm rigging:

The entire set is listed here:

Hope this helps.

Lloyd Warner out of Utah also sales various sizes of rigging line (his is from 100% linen). Give him a buzz at   warwoods@infowest.com and ask for miniature rope code no. 6011, that is 50 feet of rope of .080 inch = 2 mm. According to his most recent price list, he wants 13 dollars for this particular one, but make sure.

Thanks for the help.  I'll definitely reach out to Lloyd.

This model isn't really a scale replica of any particular ship, but rather more of a decorative piece. From what I could tell from the photos, the blocks, running, and standing rigging, is scaled much larger than it should be for a model of that size, but again, it was probably done that way to make them more visible as a decoration. The bright side is that it's not beyond repair, and you have a lot of room for artistic interpretation with the sizes of the lines.

Cheers
