Baby Bootlegger by Gerhardvienna - 1/10 - Radio

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

As my admiral commanded me, I will have to build beneath my historic old ships another. more modern boat, a BabyBootlegger will be made then. The plans came from John Toms free for download, lots of infos are to find in the internet. I found one really good building report at rc.groups http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1805606think I will try to stay close to this one. But not all that nails the builder used for his model, they were not there at the original boat, as photos from it show. I still have no clue what engine to use, maybe I make it electric at first, with an opinion for fuel drive later :o .

Here the plans again, 4 mm plywood is at home for the frames and keel works. under planking will be made with 3 mm Balsa wood, visible planking with 1 - 1,5 mm mahogany wood.

The model will be about 90 cm long and about 18cm wide.

The nails you refer to are actually rivets and Baby Bootlegger is studded with them. A close up view of her will show you that she has thousands of little bronze rivets holding her planking on. It's quite beautiful. She's my favourite motor boat. A beautiful gold studded mahogany cigar of a boat. And fast. Her engine is a work of art as well.

Hi Sailor

If the rivets were, they will be on the model, thats a fact! If someone here has a close shot from them would be nice to show, even the pattern this rivets were set would be interesting then.

The Baby was a really fast craft, no wonder with this giant Hispano-Suiza engine. More than 11 litres must have power....

post-24068-0-21305400-1465533219.jpg

Somewhere in the internet I found original drawings and the full handbook to the engine, so I might be able to rebuild it in measure, when my new milling machine is on the workbench!

That Hispano Suiza was good for about 300 horsepower if I recall correctly. Her hull is indeed covered in rivets. I have a few images of her but can't seem to post them. You have to look closely but if you do, you can see that they are in fact there. I seem to recall seeing an image that shows the rivets well but I don't have it on this computer. Google images might help there.

For the rivets I found only this photograph from the original boat

from http://cdn.silodrome.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Baby-Bootlegger-30-Bragg.jpg, the rows of rivets appear as dark points in the shadow

post-24068-0-59973000-1465564266.jpg

And one more from a model, made in Germany. Here are the rivets good to see, and the pattern seems to be close to the pattern from the photograph above. Pic comes from http://www.miniwerft.de/die-miniwerft/modelle-im-bau/

Hi Gerhard,  This is quite a switch from your Cairo.  But it is definitely a beautiful boat.  I forgot about John Toms they have a lot of fine plans of steam engines too.

Hi Bob

Not a really switch, the Cairo stays as my main project. The Baby is "ordered" from my admiral, she likes such fast and sporty boats. And, IF I build something sporty, it must be an eyecatcher! I found John Toms by searching for Steam engines, and found that plans beneath lots of others by coincidence.

Nice boat to build and very high standard when you want to build like the boats on the photo's. In Dortmund I saw this model of a bootlegger. Also lots of other boats like that. I like the mirror finish.

Hi Nenad

This will be a learning thing for me too! I`ve never made such a shining finish, all boats I ever made were grey fleet or historic, no glossy paint on them!

Back again, and almost done with my kitchen renovation. Just a few days more and that is completed!

By taking a good look at the plans I discovered two things to change. The propellershaft is too long, it will be in the final version just about 75 mm instaed of 98 mm lopng. And the form of the rudder is not good the way it is drawn at the plans. The turning point would be much too far in front of the propeller, and the form of the blade is unnessesary large.

I marked the things to change on the photo!

Hi Elijah

She does! I just hope i can make her shine so good!

Hello everyone! Thank you all for your interest& many likes!

Today I found some time for the first step if the rudder making. It consists of a piece of brass tube 6 x 4 mm, a brass bar of 4 mm dia., and some 1 mm brass wire at the moment, even more brass will follow. The bar is soldred into the tube, 1 mm Brass wire was soldered to the tube from outside, and then all was covered with 3mm balsa wood. The rudder then was grinded to shape, and will be coated with 0,1 mm brass sheet.

As I`ve startet yesterday with the rudder, I made some progress today. The blade is brass plated now, tomorrow I will prepare it with some filler and then paint it black. Although the original rudder seems to be raw metal, I prefer to have some paint on it.

Thank you Bob!

It´s not quite like I wanted it, maybe there will be another try. First I want to filler and paint the blade, then habe a good look at it, and then decide if it is good enough or not! We`ll see tomorrow................

Btw, Whoever has a good photo from the Rudder/Propeller section from the original boat PLEASE show it here! I found only one in the internet, and there is almost nothing to see. I`m still free to change everything on the rudder to get as close as possible to the real boat.

Hi Carl

Thank you! The photo from the Babyface shows it best, by searching a bit more I found the site from Silodrome, they have good plans to the Bootöegger. After I have seen this I will have to build the full framework first, and the rudder/ prop assembling then. The "old" rudder is cancelled!

Hi again

After Carl`s good hints I found some time to redraw the rudder/ Propeller section, will be a hard thing to make, but not impossible. And I glued the first parts from the plan to 4 mm plywood, but had not enough glue stick to glue them all. This will be made tomorrow, and then all will be cut from the wood.

The actual rudder and prop section, the measures given from the plans are correct now.

Glad to have been of service, Gerhard. Sometimes a link is all it takes to help someone out ... Looks good ... maybe I will have a go at that build in the near future too. A bit like the Arno XI from Ferrari I've got stashed for later ...

Hi Carl

thanks again, your links was great support! The Arno is on my list for later, but I found no plans for her, just the 1958 Ted Jones classic roundnose plans.

I would be glad to have a "competitor" for the Baby  , feel free to use the drawings for your own build, as anyone may do!

Regards

Gerhard

Back again, but not much to report at the time ;)

The paper sheets are all glued to plywood, and now I`m trying to construct the rudder with 3D-CAD, just to figure the easiest way out how to make it. Pics will follow, when all is done perfect on the PC, maybe with measured drawings for "open Use" to everyone!

Regards and thank you all for your interest & so many likes.......

Hello again!

The drawings took much longer than I expected, but now are the first results here. The upper end of the rudder axle can be finished when i build the boat, I have no clue at the time how to steer. One possible way can be a steering bar below the waterline, the other a timing gear belt on the upper end.

But here come the first drawings. The keel plate must be cut different to the plans follow the thick red lines.

Full view of new rudder, the yellow part will be shown in deep blue in the details drawings

Gerhard,

I think your rudder will work.  Possibly use horns on the rudder post and wire/line to the servo?  As an aside, I'm not sure why you redesigned it.
