HMS Bounty by Steve 12345 - FINISHED - Billing Boats - 1:50

Recommended Posts

Moving right along on your planking!  Well done.

I was interested to see your other project - the Mare Nostrum.  I picked up an old Billing Boats model - the Krabbenkutter - I thought that as the hull shape was quite different the the Bluenoses I'm starting with that I could prepare myself for more challenging builds like yours.

Unfortunately once the box arrived I could stop myself from starting it too!

Start your build log for the Mare Nostrum!  I'll be glad to follow.

We have a regional "classified ad" site here in Canada called Kijiji (sort of the same as Craigslist).  Tends to be "real"people selling stuff from their cupboard rather than eBay vendors.  I got the Bluenose II kit for $CDN75 - a bargain!

garboard plank

not sure if correct position however ive done my maths and this will work for me hopefully no drop planks at bow.

stern will definitely requires stealer or two as the distance is one plank greater than mid ship im still happy with this

Your garboard plank looks good. Not climbing on either the stern or stem but nice, flat and straight like it should be. Sounds like you have a good plan and it is working well for you.

small update showing the planking .

now I have a question for the experienced members as a carpenter with eighteen plus years experience of carpentry I have pondered over this all evening please take a look at the last picture and answer. is there a difference if I close this band of planking from deck to keel or keel to deck .

I feel from deck to keel the  band will close successfully as the angle that the plank meets the stern creates a wider band for example 2 seven mm planks create 21 mm however from keel to deck only 14mm perhaps im over thinking this and just need to crack on but im curious if there would be a difference

First of all you sure have done a good job of planking so far, when I get to this stage of planking I will quite often work both ways, up and down. I am not really sure if it would make a difference or not, it doesn't look like you are going to have any problems.

I don't think it will make a difference either. As long as you continue to follow your layout and you don't taper the plank the wrong direction you will be fine. Great job on the planking by the way. You are doing a very nice job and will have good looking hull soon.

Been very slow progress over the holidays but still tried to get atleast one strake of planking done per day.

with a bit of free time this evening after fitting another strake decided to tackle the issue of what to do with the underside of the stern cabin ,this may seem like a simple task but has troubled me from the early planking stage.

I have seen other builds and google images where people have run the planking right to the transom however I suspect this is not correct.

this is a few photos of how I decided to do it and may not be correct after all the closest ive ever been to a ship is a modern day passenger ferry .

As a side note I am always reluctant to dip into the kit materials unless I know what they are intended for so after receiving as a present the small proxxon ks 230 I am now able to rip new material when in doubt and save kit material.Ido have a full size table saw and band saw however to rip material so small I feel would be unsafe .

And for anyone wondering as I did if the small proxxon saw is capable of ripping planking material the answer yes most definitely and a fine consitant job at that

You are doing an excellent job on the planking. It is looking nice and even. I can't speak to the accuracy of the planking under the cabin but what you have done looks fine.

That saw will be a great tool for you to have. Being able to rip your own planking is a big advantage especially when you get into kit bashing and going above what the kit gives.

Hello all welcome back for an update. :piratebo5:

I have completed planking and must say after going at it with a proper plan and layout have really enjoyed this sometimes frustrating part of the build

I have sanded the hull lightly filled the pin holes I used to hold the planks and re sanded.

as you can see from the photos there is no need for expensive keel clamps  and water line type drawing devices

I have simply held the ship plum by clamping a block of wood to the keel and I screwed a pencil to the top of a piece of wood tested height on wall then cut wood block to apropiate  height.

after fitting the whales I begun paint starting with the stain because if I go over the lines I can paint over the stain but cant stain over the paint ;)

For months before I started the build I have struggled with how the bulwarks are fitting in a billings kit they seem to show me in the drawing laying a plank flat and building on top of this however it then does not marry up with the scale drawing.

also I think they want me to just use the bare plywood .

So I have taken matters into my own hands cut the tabs off I so tried to protect from damage from start of build .

I then planked the bulwarks inside and out and will add thin strips on outside and inside of bulwark so it looks like it is on top of these and marrys up with scale drawing.

also stern cabin mouldings are going straight in the bin forcing myself to come up with something more accurate.not sure how that will go watch this space.

finally ive begun work on framing the inside of the bulwarks .

Thanks for viewing

Steve.

Thanks Gemma if there is anything I can help you with don't hesitate to ask .

I have found instructions lacking so have done a few things my own way so don't take anything I do as gospel but I do hope the photos help and you can see how things turn out my way before committing to my approach

That planking came out sharp. Well done! Seeing the wales, bulwarks and stern windows coming together and finally moving on past the hull work must be a great feeling. I like the choice of stain and paint that you have used. She will be a beautiful ship. :)

It sure does Doug thanks for following.

Thanks ej I'm enjoying the colour scheme it's a nice change from looking at my victory

I was tempted to copper plate but liked the white hull often depicted on bounty .

I have no idea why the hull is painted white on bounty and some other ships is it just white paint in real life or does it represent some sort of coating ?

Hi Steve,

Great work on your Bounty! Lots of progress made and the results are very nice indeed. The hull planking is especialy good, considering the bluff bow is a challenge. I once read that the white applied to the bottom of the hull was some kind of coating to discourage marine growth. Quite toxic in fact. I don't know how effective it was. I like the white too and used it on my Unicorn.

Anyhoo, thanks for all the great photos, and I'll continue to follow your log.

Hi Steve, I've really enjoyed reading your log and it's been really informative.  I'm just about to start a Constructo 1:50 Bounty and I'm just pulling some photos together to start my own log.  I was really pleased to see your deck planking configuration as my kit doesn't specify what it should be and it provides long planking lengths which wouldn't be very realistic so I'm going to adopt your 120mm system.  Thank you once again for such a brilliant log.

Cheers

Hi Steve,

Nice progress, looking really good.

The White is White Lead Paint, producing a dirty White finish.

The alternative seems to have been a mixture of Wood-Coal Tar that gave an almost Black finish, Sulphur was often added to the mixture to ward off Toredo.

Sometimes it is good to take a break from a build to either work on another or do something else entirely. I have two builds going myself as well as other fun projects to help with preventing burn out. It also keeps the eyes fresh when looking at a ship. We can easily get tunnel vision if we don't step back occasionally. Take your time and we will be here when you get back to it!

Hello all I am back in business on the bounty build after my short break building another ship I don't think I will attempt a side build again as I think it give me an easy option out of the bounty when things got challenging.

Even before I started the bounty I could not get my head round how billings intended the bulwarks to be fitted but after the short break have just stormed in and started building and im happy with how that step has went I think sometimes you just need to build if its wrong there is nothing that cant be ripped off and re done.

Gemmajf if you are reading I have ordered the caldercraft figurehead and  I ordered amati stern cabin windows portside and starboard I should hopefully get them in the morning I will post some pics of them in comparision to the kit provided ones ,I have no idea what size they are or scale I believe the caldercraft to be from  1/60 the amati pieces im not sureDSC00625.jpg.a99e53909392e1f56f33a631c748656f.jpgDSC00626.jpg.5b651f34f5c3849f9e545c1872fc88a1.jpgDSC00627.jpg.250cdfbbd5ef181a6c9bdcf8157652ec.jpgDSC00628.jpg.ad5c4a6e6f589dd920512e5747b64e55.jpgDSC00629.jpg.9941a4a56a74d74b7dc443fda9b89272.jpgDSC00630.jpg.0c738d8bb8765fba5a2fd1b4ad5b043b.jpgDSC00631.jpg.2f4ce25b9fd2968d504a44acac998891.jpgDSC00632.jpg.a0dadd7a4aa9d0ca76ddd488912d8f40.jpgDSC00633.jpg.8a001cef2cd50b9f7abecb0461624699.jpgDSC00634.jpg.c8db790eed2ce3c01ff00bdda8abef7f.jpgDSC00635.jpg.305c682712a670892589f87501c85ef1.jpgDSC00636.jpg.51d125eecc0011da13acf09b6480f0b6.jpgDSC00637.jpg.d6eef746c086c7680decc2b44edb7a94.jpg
