I have a quantity of cherry in strips 0.5 mm thick that can be cut down to a 4mm planking width, has anyone used this for decking or even wales? Its a bit thin for a final planking but is easy enough to build up for a wale.

Hi Norman,

I've used quite a bit of cherry in ship modeling. I did the hull of my privateer Lively using cherry as well as the deck furniture and spars.

However, I wouldn't recommend it for decking. It will darken with exposure to light and after a while, so it won't look the way it looks when you are planking. The final color comes out a reddish brown. It's a pretty color, but probably not ideal for a deck.

For wales or whatever, it's fine, but I would just get a piece the right thickness rather than fool around with trying to build it up using the 0.5mm stuff just because you have it.

As a matter of interest, Norman, where were you able to buy 0.5mm cherry from? Was it in the UK? I'd be glad to know because I need 0.5mm cherry to finish off my ship's boat. I've been using 1/16 and 3/32 cherry board which I found at Cornwall Model Boats, but haven't yet found a supplier of smaller strips. As a result I had to do the ribs using walnut and the combination looks a bit odd.

Thanks, LFrank, I had a look, but it's based in the USA and also the strips there are no longer sold by them or out of stock. I'm really looking for a UK supplier to avoid heavy shipping costs.

Cherry wood well is suitable for a decor and finishing of details, for a deck flooring it too dark.

Best regards,
