Muscongus Bay Lobster Smack by cdogg - FINISHED - Midwest Products

Recommended Posts

http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/3131-muscongus-bay-lobster-smack-by-cdogg-midwest-products/?p=88644

It's the rear hull sections, the bow is easy as you just knife away the balsa blocks and when you are close to done use low grid sand paper.

In this post you will see I followed the previous advice and I soaked the wood in rubbing alcohol (my preference over water) and also cut out a card stock piece to help me trim the wood down.  It worked out great and finished perfect.  Hope that helps.

Thanks guys. I'm two years away from 40! Just built the base for the lobster boat today. Took, longer than I thought. Stained it dark and drying it now. I will post pics tomorrow as I am off to a relatives house for a bonfire. Thanks again for following my lobster boat journey!

This is a far as I got this weekend.  Up on its display temporarily, now I to work on the bow and stern before I can hoist the sales.  Also, the pre-cut rudder matches the plans but is way too big for the build, anyone else in the lobster boat society have this issue as well.

Also, this pic provides a new view of my shipyard!  I've got a mini USS Constitution for rigging practice back there I didn't make a build log for.  And of course my first build, the Midwest Dinghy with no display supports yet.

The light isn't that great all together in there unfortunately, I bought an LED lamp at Office Max that clamps to the side of the desk, works great, only $20.  Highly recommended as it can hover over the boat or bend down to the bottom.  Thats the light from the right side.

I cut out some mahogany pieces to try out for the transom last night, going to restain the wood with Varathane Early American, much better than the Minwax I used before, deeper color.

Here is the transom shot, I can make this really good or really F it up, haha.  I have spent about 3 hours trying out different combos for this damn part.  I swear I made the hull in like 5 hours, and now have spent 10+ trying to customize the damn deck!!

I completly understand, I have a little over 20 hours into mine so far, and it will take a few more hours for fairing the frames and getting transom right. I think I can start planking on day 4. Yours looks sweet, Great colors,  I like how you did the cabin top

Hey, one thing I failed to do was after soaking the side boards,  using masking tape to put them in place and let them dry.  That's how I got those rail gaps, didn't let them set.  Impatience is very bad for this hobby!!

Casey, Your build is looking really good!  As for the rudder, when compared to pleasure sail boats, yes it is oversize.  An oversize rudder is common on small work boats, as they have to be able to turn quickly and on a smaller radius.

Thanks all.  I added two more layers on thinned paint last night, looks way better than the original coats.  The original  acrylic was too thick.

Going for the rudder tonight to finish off the hull, I have an idea to spice it up, will post some pics.  Got the mast done, hopefully I will get some time this weekend to get it to the finishing stage.

Right on Casey, I cant wait to see it , I just put  the second coat of primer on my kit build. How is doing the mast and boom ? I have made 2 bowsprit's so far, its been difficult to get the proportions right.

Also, I somehow lost my samson post and my hatch cover.  The investigation currently has two main suspects, a 4 year old child and a six month old dog.  Despite the criminal activity in my shipyard, the Admiral still places blame on me for not putting the boat parts away.  How dare she! :)

You can see I had to use a different cut of Mahogany for the hatch cover.  Also, I am changing the back end, the straight board isn't going to do it, but it worked nice as a placing template for the railing.

I still need to do a touch up to the water line as well.  My advice for painting is make sure to thin the acrylic, my 80th mistake with this build.  I had to redo almost the whole thing because the acrylic dried and it looked like the moon surface.  I repainted the hull and did 3/4 paint and 1/4 thinner and it did wonders.

I've never done sails before either and that's what's stopping me from finishing my Albatros kit...I lack confidence I guess, even though several here have finished Albatros build and theirs look great and the pictures should be helpful in finishing mine.

Well, got the masts and the samson post in.  Waiting for the sails and then some desperately needed touch ups.

I bought a blue bottle of $2 acrylic from Michaels, I forget the name, but I was going to use it to paint something else and it turned out great on the wood so I put it on the boat. thanks!

Ugh, started the rigging last night and my lack of boat knowledge struck!  I wired the blocks with the loops parallel with the block holes for the rigging, everything crosses each other, especially at the top of the mast.  Lesson learned, I have to redo the blocks tonight and have another go at it.
