TRITON Cross Section bbrockel

Recommended Posts

I started the TRITON cross section build as a first step toward scratch building.  Or as they call it here the "Dark Side".  The plans are very easy to follow, crisp and clean.  It has been a pretty steep learning curve for me.  Going from having most of the parts laser cut to having to cut and shape each piece myself.  Had some set backs but for the most part, progress has been in the forward direction.  I have postd a few pics with descriptions to cover my progress to date.

Bob:

You are doing some really nice work. I like your right angle jig. That will be good to use on a fully framed model as well. Good job.

Thank you all for the very kind comments.

Sjors, I copied the gantry-style build board from Mike41 over at Model Ship Builder web site.  I've added the link to Mike's thread on building the build board.  Take a peek, it's pretty easy to construct.    http://www.modelshipbuilder.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?5571.0

Hi Bob

Nice work. I like your idea of the extended False Keel to hold everything in place. I'll be watching your progress.

I like how you kept the false keel long so the you could screw it down. Great way to hold it. If I change scales and redo my first step then I'll make sure that I do the same. This is something that should be adding to the start of the plans for everyone to see. Looking forward to seeing more. Thanks for sharing.

Christian, Ron, Rocker and Grant.  Thank you all for looking in on my build and your kind words.  The idea for the extended keel to screw it down to the build board came from another member here on the forum prior to the "Great Crash".  I just borrowed it.

A little more progress on the TRITON. Adding the floor planks, some of the hull planks and shaping and dry fitting the lower gun deck beams.  Little bit at a time.   :)

Bob,

it's looking good. You're right, a little bit at a time. All my screwups occurred whilst rushing things. There is a jig for doing deck beam rounding (from TFFM), if you're interested I can dig out some pictures. It does make life a little easier,

Regards,

Grant.

Thank you Rusty.  It's repurposed douglas fir (approx 50 years old, very nice to work with) from a remodel project in the house.

You bet Grant.  I'm always interested in new ways to do a task.  And pictures are a great help.  Thanks.

It's looking great. I like your clamps you are using. I will have to make some. Your planking looks great too.

Maybe it my eyes, but on the lower gun deck beam on the right hand side, it looks like the beam has a split in it. Does it? I zoomed in on the beam but it's still hard to tell. Just thought I would bring it to your attention.  :)

Ron, If you are referring to the second lower deck beam, its the paper template coming unglued from the wood, but no split.  Thanks for keeping an eye out.

Thank you Russ.  Just trying to keep up with your quality level of work.  I'm really enjoying your Biloxi Schooner build.

Bout time you get this build log up!  Jk.  Great work.  It's really coming along.  Sounds as though you've made great use of research and used all the best techniques.  The quality of the build shows that it's paying off.
