H.M.S. Triton Cross Section 1:24 by Tim

Recommended Posts

Well I downloaded and printed the pdf and now starting this build thread. I need to review a few things before I go too much farther and get more info.

1st major question is reviewing ratio's and scales and printing. When I see the ratio of 1:48 this means to me, one scale 1/4 inch is equal to 1 foot. Therefore when I print out any plan that has a set of foot measurement like the Triton pdf has on it,

I want to print such that 5 feet on the plans is equal to 1.25 inches. Right??

If I wanted to print the plans in 1:24 then I would want the same 5 feet to measure 2.5 inches. Right?

Someone else is working in 1:36 scale therefore he would have made the 5 feet measure 1.67 inches Right?

I guess that the next thing is to try to obtain the overall measurements off a set of plans. That way one would have an idea of the final size of the project that they would want to finish. Then after review you can pick the scale that you want to work in.

In reviewing the first step pdf looks like the ship area that is being modeled is about 19.7 feet long. That what I got off the pdf.

Therefore in 1:48 looking at something about 4.925 inches long?

in 1:32 about 6.566 inches long

and           in 1:24 about 9.85 inches long

That sound about right?

Some help please??

I'm not good at scales but you are right about 1:48 and 1:24. I'm not sure about 1:32. Sorry.

By the way, 42Rocker... when printing make sure "actual size" is checked.  Also, it's very good idea to put a ruler down and make sure that 4 feet = 1 inch.

Thanks to all for the above posts. My error in one part of the above I used 1:32 and in another part used 1:36 that makes errors real quick. I really used to know this stuff so Thanks to all for helping me with the review.

Pete38 -- Thanks for all of that info as now I can try to make a more informed choice of scales to use. You gave the following measurements

"""Keel length about 7.5" inchs""" and """frames about 9.5" tall and about 13" at wides point""" in the scale of 1:32 this means the model in feet is about

Keel length about 19.7 feet and frames about 25.333 feet tall and 34.667 feet at the widest point. Therefore in 1:48 scale this would mean

Keel length about 4.925 inches and frames about 6.334 inches tall and 8.667 inches wide at the widest point.

Well how I have a few more facts to go on. This means that if I take a normal 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper that the 1:48 scale will make frames about the width of the paper and about 2/3 of the paper high. Using a 1:32 scale then the frames almost go to the top of the paper and it would almost take the width of two sheets of paper for the widest frame. Something to think about indeed. Did a quick rought drawing of a copy of frames in the two sizes 1:48 and 1:32.

RustyJ -- I Thank you for the info about having to make the keelson and keel and false keel before the next step happens.

As I also will be cutting and resizing wood from large pieces I'll need to think about scales. This way if I find that I should not have cut that last piece of boxwood down to .25 inches as I'm going to need a thickness of .325 for the frames.

As far as wood goes I like the old Harold Hahn method of using elbony for the false keel. So thinking about elbony for false keel and what for the keel? Boxwood or parmarfin or redgum or ?? Any thoughts anyone?? Could try to dig up some cherry. Also have some popular lying around, frames I think due to color.

Frames - I think that at that time I'll use a couple of different woods and leave an area on the inside of one side open so one can see the frame work on the inside. Thoughts on woods?? Popular and cherry or boxwood or ?

Planking - Really don't have any thoughts on what to use there. Boxwood or parmarfin. Well cross that bridge when it's time.

Inside deck planks - anyone?

Cannons - wood or brass? Something to think about.

Lots of stuff to think about and try to act on next weekend as I'll need to resaw a few pieces of wood.

Well made some saw dust tonight. I'm still doing some finish up work on the house that I'm living in, but I was the general contractor and about everything else. So need to start thinking about detail tools again and working to closer detail.

I'm sharing a few pics that I hope will get me into the next step of being able to receive the rest of the plans. Trying to that is.

I went over and cut some boards down on the large saw and then setup the sherline mill that I have, to cut the rabbit. See Pic. Worked out using that bit from wood touch to depth that seems to match the drawing I needed to drop the cutting bit about .070. The end cuts that you see in the pic don't look as nice as the other parts, but that's them in 1:48.

I'm still thinking about 1:48 or 1:36. I seem to like that larger size. Which means that I'll be making another set of parts if I decide to upsize like others have down. Still thinking about making this a nice large master piece. Still thinking..

Hope to be able to receive the plans for review. Now to work on posting pics in this ,new to me, website.

Ok pics posting problem. When to the help section and found the following statement

"""This will insert an image.""" and a button--- just don't have that button on my screen. Do you have to have a number of posts before you are allowed to post pics?? Or??

Well went to the website that led me to this one and was able to post a build thread with pics attached over there. Please see

http://modelshipbuilder.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?7814.0

for my thread build over there and posted pics.

If someone would be nice and inform me how to post pics I'll be happy to post then over here also.

So whats the next step??

Thanks for this.

Well downloaded the HMS Triton's over 200 pdf's last night glancing at them at the same time. Then loaded a copy of them to a compact flash card to take to put on the work computer so I have a back up to view.

All I can say is WOW,, Thanks to that person or everyone that helped to make the project happen.

Still thinking about the scale. Well need to start working on a building area and getting some wood ready.

Nice work so far 42rocker! Are you going to use pine wood for the frames and everything? The grain is quite wide.

Here are some old pics from cabrapente showing how he make the rabbet. I think the result is impresive but he use cherry wood with a closer grain.

Keep going!

Thanks for the pics showing another way to make the rabbit. But I think that I'll stay with the sherline method of making a rabbit. Ever since I saw a picture of (I believe it was) David Antscherl cutting a rabbit this way in one of his HMS Swan books, I've always thought that this was a better way.

As far as the pine wood goes,, well in order to get to see the plans I had to make the keel and false keel and the keelson. I normally like to review things before I get in to deep. So out to the garage grab a piece of broken pine board from my son's karate days and turned on the big grizzy table saw and a few minutes later I had the pieces. Back into the house grab a bit that has the right profile and then into the sherline and a few minutes later I had a rabbit. Then post pics and get the plans. Reviewed the plans (GREAT PLANS) and in the next post I'll talk about my finally selection for scale and why and who's to blame for it.

So the pine pieces, well nice practice.

Woods see the 5th post down. Now that there is a great woods materials list that has been posted I'll be reviewing but mainly I'll stay with the woods that I talked about in the 5th post down. Looked at some parmarfin a few minutes ago and thinking about using it and then saw some walnut, so still reviewing the woods. Hope to start cutting tomorrow.

BLAME GAME --- It's time to play the Blame Game. If your Blamed then fess up to it. Sound off right back, go ahead.

Lets start the Blame Game.

1st Person to Blame is Pete38. Starts folks thinking out of the box. Does a 1:32 scale cross section.

2nd person to Blame is Mike41 from MSB Does this great Proto-type Bomb Vessel in 1:24

3rd person to Blame is a lot of folks mtaylor, Winston MSB, and the fellow or fellows that did the great job on the plans that I don't know the name or names of. GREAT JOB.. Who were the design folks, please name them so we can Blame them..

4th Anyone else that was in on the making of this great project.

What am I Blaming them for!! 1st My choice of doing this project and 2nd in 1:24 scale.  That said my MANY THANKS for the ways that they have pointed me even if they did not know they were doing it. It looks like a great first scratch build project that I'll do in 1:24 scale. Which will match up in scale to a future build (I hope) of the Cross Section of the Bomb Vessel from MSB. From the matching sizes to compare Cross Sections with, to just building in a bigger scale.

A few other things pushed me that way. 1st Pete38's build, said build it bigger, then I tried to find a way to print the plans his way. Well don't have a printer that can handle 13x19 paper. Got a quote from office depot of $19.95 per page as they can't do 13x19 so printing next size up makes a total printing cost around $500.00. So did some thinking, then saw the 1:24 model of the Bomb Vessel (MSB) and said that's a nice scale and if I'm going to take the plans apart and redo them to fit 8.5x14 legal paper that I can print on. Then I might as well step them up as I'm redoing them. Therefore I spend about 6 to 7 hours taking the 1:48 plans apart and redoing them to print on several sheets in 1:24. So now I'm starting to prints the plans in 1:24 and still thinking about what woods I'm going to start cutting apart. Hoping to start cutting the wood for the frames this weekend. Thinking about two different woods for the frames redgum and basswood. Then Walnut for the chocks (need to add to the plans, but in 1:24 why not). With ebony for the false keel and basswood for the keel and I like the idea of using ebony for the keelson. Got the ebony keelson idea from mtaylor's nice build (more Blame). Need to find the bloodwood and the holly and a few planks of cherry that I know I have around someplace. Have lots of oak but I think that I'll save that for my wife's cabinet trim. Still thinking about wood types and what I already have. Buying wood is not in the budget right now.

So if you have been BLAMED take a large THANK YOU from me to you.. You Blamed folks have given direction and hope to my doing this. I also Thank all of the others folks that are posting their Cross Sections as they are going to be a great guiding path. Going by the idea if they can do it I can try to do it.

If anyone is interested in learning how to redo the plans then post in this thread about it and I'll try to work up a how to do it. If your interested in redoing the full ship plans talk to someone else, not me..

I also started a thread in woods about making your own hobby wood. Seen some nice reclaimed Cherry wood work. More Blame for some folks.

So if your mad at me for blaming you, well sorry about that, it was all in fun on my end. Your Work was just to good. THANKS FOR THE GUIDING PATH!!

Enjoy Life!!

You can "blame" Russ and, as I recall, Don for the plans.  You can blame Joss (Matrim) as he took over running this when Russ stepped down.

I guess if blaming is there... I blame MSW for giving me the idea to settle on 1:64 for all full hull models.  Had to buy a printer that could handle 11 X 17 paper. BTW, need I mention the power tools...?  Maybe all the build logs did it?  :D  :D  :D :D

Also be it noted that I fully understand the word copyright. I have redone and resized these plans for my own personal use. If someone is interested in learning how to redo and resize plans for their own personal use, plans that they already have permission to use, I would be happy to tell them how.

My many Thanks Again to the folks that drew up these plans and I would not want to step on any of their toes, or the copright owners toes.

So Russ and Don and Joss -- Many Thanks and Thanks again to all that need to be Thanked

Mark - mtaylor

1:64 sounds just great for the full size ship. Most folks do the Alfred Warrior in 1:64 and using the same scale for both sounds great. I understand at 1:48 it's about the same size as the Warrior in 1:64. 35 inches

Hi 42rocker,

Lucky for me I had already gotten well underway with the Triton Cross Section

before finding the Bomb Vessel plans on MSB or I too may have wandered

the path you are about to take.

Good luck and it will be fun and interesting watching this build.

As far as thinking outside of the box, i'm not....it's just the box that I am in is so big I get lost alot...

"Build it Bigger" Yep.....Eyes are starting to fade quicker than I want....

Seriously, at 1:24 this will be a very interesting build to watch

PS...

Since this will be so big....we expect alot more detail to go into it....Ha!

Pete

You get so much more "Blame" as you and others keep on posting more stuff that you keep on finding on the HMS Triton. WOW.

I'm sad to say I've hit another delay. I just redid my inks on my printer at work and the main black ink is not working anymore, period. So I have 1/2 $%#$ printed plans and test pages at work. Now at home and the wife's printer does not take legal sheets of paper. Interesting. Well my home printer is of course out of black ink. So thinking about a CISS CIS ink system for my home printer that does take legal paper. Still looking for one on ebay. Have other things to work on to get ready for the next step on this anyway. Also on the few 1/2 $%#$% printed pages that I printed out 4 foot on the scale does equal 2 inches. Nice to see that double check.

Adding more details -- well will try to add as much more detail as I can see off from any 1:96 plan out there to my 1:24 build. LOL. As a first scratch build I'm going to try my best. Reading -- done a lot. Seen other builds -- been there took a lot of photos. Books -- bought a lot (don't tell the wife)

But end result is that this will be the first scratch build project besides my current house that I'm living in that I drew the plans for and was general contractor for and other than the concrete work did most of the other stuff. Tools -- got the full scale stuff not the small stuff. I think that I'm going to have to go the Harold Hann route and use a full size table saw. Do have sherline mill and lathe and both large and small band saws.

Well enough of this going to look at a few parts that I'm working on as I'm building a thickness sander that works on the sherline lathe.

O'Happy Day's after checking with wife and print and manual and then fighting with the #%$%# epson website I found that if you push the button on the bottom of the paper tray then it opens up to a larger size for 8.5 x 11 legal paper. Start printing Wednesday night after I get back from kayaking with my German (Kohn) clients. Ra Ra. Before that I ordered the inking system so hopefully will not run of ink for a while.

The details will be what you decide to add.  Maybe artillary tools?  Barrels?  Ciphers on the gun barrels?  Etc.?  :)   The two most important details aren't ever shown in pictures.  One is the fun.  The other is the satisfaction, be it the learning curve, the workmanship, or just accomplishing.

Small update. My work printer prints out the plans in 1:24 scale right on the number. Perfect you could say if every other pass was not blank that is. My wife's printer is linked to her Apple computer and no matter what I have tried 95% to 105% prints out the same undersize under scale print. That print set screen is not the same as either of mine. Over the weekend I shall try to get her to let me link my windows system to her printer and see what happens. My home printer is just not working at this time. Hoping a new print cartage will fix it, in the mail of course.

So to try to get things ready for the prints to get done I have been working on the sherline lathe working on a sanding drum project that I started several years ago. Hope to finish that within the next ten days or so.

So the wood is resting peacefully at this time. I'll try to make a little saw dust over the weekend.

Hope all is going well with your builds.

I do like this Blame Game!!  We could all dance the gangnam style arround our logs and just blame for fun. The humor will safe the world!

Since you are going to work at 1:24 and the frames on the plans are double frames... Have you thought not to add the chocks between the several futtocks of the frame? See the pic attached from Bryan Lavery´s "Nelson´s Navy".

Enjoy the journey!
