Shenandoah by @macbride - Corel - first build

That's a wild set of finger joints on that paddleboard deck.

Placed the first hull plank below the bulwark. not perfect but not terrible.

My fear is in the subsequent plank placement. It's easy to visualize how the planks line up at the bow, but the stern is way different, and there is virtually no guidance in the instructions.

Here is the stern/transom prior to bulwark placement:

It's hard to picture how the planks will transition from just under the bulwark further down. Any advice?

Also: the instructions do not mention making a rabbet, but should I do that?

A picture of the finished boat (a view of the stern end) would be sooo helpful, but I haven't had any luck finding such an image.

Thanks for any insight!

Hi Andy,

I posted some shots of this area on my build. See post #88. I hope it's helpful. I beveled the bottom of the transom so that it lies on the same plane as the filler pieces forward of it. The planks will attach to the lower edge of the transom.

I cut a rabbet on mine. So far it's making it easy to get a clean-looking edge on the stem where the planks attach. I'm sure there have to be other ways to get a good, even joint there without cutting a rabbet. Being new myself, I just don't know them. Hopefully, someone will chime in.

For those following my other ship building adventure, lots of progress with the Kaholo paddle board, too:

The bottom and sides are now joined, initially with copper wire (stitch):

Then with epoxy mixed with wood flour (glue):

It's a great feeling to see things come together!!!!

Even though my copilot thinks it's boring....

Andy, you've been really busy! The Shenandoah is coming along at such a pace! You're going to leave me in the dust. It's looking good, and +1 for wood putty.

That's a cool paddle board. Is this the first time you've done a stitch and glue hull? I've never done one--I've only seen others do them. Thanks for the pics. Keep 'em coming.

Progressing on hull planking. I've learned a lot & I am confident my next build will be nicer looking & go faster!

Learned that walnut splinters fairly easily, hence the thumb bandage!!

Also improvised on various clamping techniques.

Andy, that walnut looks great on there! I've been planning on painting my hull, but now you've got me thinking of leaving it bright. You're really covering ground fast. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Andy, I really like the color of the walnut planking. Did you oil it? The lines of your planking look really nice. Yours is the first I've seen planked up--except for the picture on the box. Keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing the photo.

I'm about three quarters done with the first layer.

Steve,

Tung oil really brings out the beauty of the walnut!

Next time I will definitely use rabbets to make the hull look its best.

The scuppers were an interesting project, and I am in awe of your boat!

Your posts really helped.

Futtocks are next!!!

You're a fast builder, Andy! Wow, your ship is looking fine! I like how you trimmed the planking at the stem and sternpost. Real clean. I agree, the trim looks really nice. The natural wood is good looking. Very inspiring.

Steve,

The kayak I'm finishing is a Pygmy Pinguino Sport.

I actually drove up to Port Townsend, WA and did their one week workshop

where 6 of us took our kits from plywood to being about 2/3 done!  It was in

October, and I really enjoyed it.

The paddle board is from CLC, which you're obviously familiar with.  My next

project is to build a double that I'm going to give to my parents.  I went with the

Wood Duck double for its stability and ease of entry.

The models I've worked on are all beginner level 1 & 2 boats from Midwest Products,

including the Chesapeake 17 kayak, Peterboro canoe, and a dinghy.  They've been

very nice projects for a beginner like me.

Looks like my Shenandoah will be sitting neglected for a while longer...

Have a great weekend!

Those Pygmy kayaks are beautiful, and yours is no exception. I've never built anything using stitch-and-glue or tape-and-glue. How hard was it? And that's one beautiful paddleboard. I've seen plans for wooden surfboards that get me all hot under the collar too. One of these days...
