  1. @stuglo I remember sending that kit to you! I thought that it was great that I was sending one back to Israel, do you have any photos of the model?
  2. Hey Mark, glad to see that you are still active on the site as well. I always liked your signature!
  3. Hey Chris good to see that you are still here and active! Thanks to everyone who messaged me about the books. They are now sold. @thibaultron there are two types of kits available, a 16" kit which is square rigged and a 27" kit which is lateen rigged. These kits are built on a strongback and are single planked. The original boat won a Gold Award at the Midwest Model Ships Competition quite a few years ago and I think that maybe it was photographed for Ships in Scale? At any rate a collector from Germany contacted me about the model and asked if it was for sale so I sent it to him, built another and that one sold as well. I then developed the kits and have been selling them as well as commissioned models ever since. I've built models as large as 48" but I'll never do that again as the shipping crate barely fit in our mini-van and the shipping cost via UPS was over $250 (too big for USPS). I've also been contacted by folks claiming to be in the motion picture industry to build a full sized boat but I turned that down since I can't build anything of that scale although I have built 17' kayaks. The cost of a 16" kit is $ 108 with free Priority Mail to the continental US (more for overseas) and a 27" kit is $160 with shipping extra. The posts for the build log of the first boat were lost when the original MSW went down years ago but here is a link to my website with more details. http://www.semillerguitars.com/sea-of-galilee-boats/
  4. Hi All, I used to be a moderator on this site when Capt'n Pugwash started it up (you'd have to be a really old grey beard to remember that). At any rate I'm not doing much ship model building any more except making for my Sea of Galilee boats and kits. I have a really nice little library of 7 ship modeling books that are all in excellent condition and I'd just as soon see them being used and put to good use rather than gathering dust on my book shelf. I'm selling the lot of them for for $70 (many are selling for $40 or more used online) with the buyer paying for the shipping. Please PM me here if you are interested and I'll post back here when they've sold. 5. Hi Dave, The hull is somewhat tricky to build, especially at the turn of the hull. If you are interested in building one of these and aren't sure yo have enough experience, I suggest buying one of Midwest's inexpensive canoe kits like the Peterboro canoe. It has a pointed bow and stern which makes for a much easier hull. These canoes use the same building technique and are great little models. Check out this post for more info http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/2530-another-wedding-another-canoe Scott
  6. Very nice work Mario! I've built four of these thus far but I wasn't sure I had explained the process that I use to build these is such a way that someone else could replicate the model. I couldn't have gotten a better "Beta tester"! I look forward to seeing your rigging and other changes to the model. One more reminder to anyone else who would like to build one of these, the price discount for MSW members ($70 plus shipping) will expire on the 4th of July. I make less than minimum wage on one of these kits at that price...
  7. Looking great, the microwave trick is a great one to use! BTW if anyone is interested in buying this kit, I will be ending the special pricing discount for MSW members on July 4, 2013. So if you are interested in purchasing one of these kits at $70 plus shipping please order by that date to receive the $10 discount! Click the link below to learn how to order.
  8. Looking great Mario! Your decking looks nice and clean without the waterways and trim and the cutwater also turned out really well. I'm very curious to see how the pre-bent cap rails turn out for you. They are tricky to bend since they must bend along the "wrong axis" and that is why I pre-bend them for you. They are put into a jig here in Wisconsin where the humidity is probably a bit higher than where you are and when I build a model, they go on the day after they are bent but you will be waiting several weeks since the initial bend... 9. Nice job Mario! One thing you will notice after framing the hull is that once all he frames are in place, the hull is incredibly strong. I'm not saying that you should tip it upside down and stand on it but I'd bet it could support 50+ pounds and not fail. Scott
  10. You're doing a fine job with the planking! This is what makes this kit something that is best suited for intermediate to advanced modelers. There is nothing to hold the hull together but the joints that you establish between the planks so they must be done right. It is fine to have some small areas that need attention after the hull is off of the strongback but for the most part the joints must be just right. Scott
  11. Luxury . There is a lot of fitting and beveling that needs to be done on the kit and Mario is doing a really good job! I pre-tapered the planks because I wanted to make sure that whoever builds this kit has the best shot at getting it right the first time. I bet that Mario will explain the importance of the taper a little later (stay tuned...) Scott http://www.scottsguitars.net/sea-of-galilee-boats/
  12. Everyone is in for a real treat as Mario continues his posts because his work is exceptional! I'm the person who makes the kits that Mario is building. I've was a mod here on MSW for many years but resigned that job because my focus has shifted to building guitars. I still build boat models but I've moved away from fully rigged ships just because there are only so many hours in a day... If you are interested in purchasing one of these kits please visit my web page and send me an e-mail from the link at the bottom of any of the pages or you can e-mail me at scott@scottsguitars.net. The cost of a kit is normally $80 plus shipping but because MSW is an organization that I've been a part of for many years is am lowering the price to MSW members to $70 plus shipping. The kit includes everything you need to build the model including mast, yard, oar and quarter rudder stock that I turn by hand. Needlees to say it takes quite a few hours to make a kit so I don't make much on a per hour basis but my interest is in getting many of these boats out there for people to see and talk about. If you want to purchase a prebuilt model, there is also information on that on the web site. I've built and shipped these models to Germany, North Carolina and Utah thus far. I don't want to hijack Marios post so please e-mail me with questions about the kit rather than post them here. Enjoy Mario's posts, he's doing a great job as my beta tester! 13. Thanks for reposting this Paddy, the Triton post lives again! I took this model to the Midwest Model Ship competition a few years ago and it took a Gold. I don't check this forum like I used to when I was a moderator here so if anyone has any specific questions, the best thing to do is to PM me here and I'll do my best to get back to you. Scott
