  1. Dear all I moved away from enamel varnishes and initially used the Valejo water based ones. Somehow they never worked for me. I recently used the Valejo polyurethane Varnishes and they gave a good result, although adhesion to the substrate looked poor. Also they come very thick, I did not thin at all but still came out fine. Just a few days ago, I used the polyurethane varnishes again but this time I thinned with the Valejo acrylic thinner and also put some retarder. The varnish became milky, left horrible brush marks and when dry started pealing off the surface. Strangely, the mat varnish over the red colour was fine. How should the Valejo varnishes be thinned? No info on their website. What water based varnishes you use and have good experience with? What do you use for thinning? Could I use enamel varnish over the acrylic paint and how long should I wait for the paint to cure/dry? Regards Vaddoc
  2. Hi hopefully someone can help. I have just about finished building the Amati Oseberg Viking ship and am not sure what to use to finish it. I was thinking of staining the hull and deck with an light oak stain. Could someone help as I do not want to ruin the finish after taking so long to build it. Thanks Steve
  3. Hi all I'd like to show you these pics, taken two days after the 3rd, final application of a special shining ointment for metals. How you can see, some "dirty"-corrosive spot arised despite me intense care to apply the cream onto the whole surface of the tiles. My aim was to "seal" (after the cream application and polish) my shinning coppering with two layers of varnish for metals just to protect the copper against the odidation etc....but know I really dont know what to do... Any help/suggestion from anyone copper-specialist on this issue? How can I solve this problem with those two-speed corrosive tiles? Thank you so much in advance.
  4. As a newbie to ship modeling I have some questions that I need some help with. Do I use primer prior to painting a wooden model? What are the advantages or are there none? I hear using varnish as a finish on most of the threads. My hardware store tells me that varnish is not used anymore and polyurethane replaced it. What are the advantages of using varnish instead of polyurethane? Why is a "satin" finish preferable compared to "glossy"? I really need some advice to give my models a professional look
  5. Hi everyone, I am new in this so i need help. (Questions for wooden ship) 1. Can you reccomend me what type of paint to use? Acrylic or another? 2. Which paint is the most resistant (that will not fade and will not crack)? 3. After applying paint do I need to apply varnish to protect color?. 4. Which primer to apply before applying the paint? Cheers!
