Scotland 1775 by cdogg - Corel - 1:64 - Baltic Ketch

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, thanks for following my Scotland build! I have been reorganizing the house lately and also my shipyard room flooded this summer, so I haven't gotten my build as much as I wanted. Good thing is that only the floor got damaged, none of my ship stuff. But, I had to fix the floor because of mold and stuff.

Anyway, I have gotten some questions about the bulkheads at step 3.

Here are some pics of those, hopefully this helps how I installed them.

Hi cdogg,

2 questions on the pictures

1. How did you maintain the curve on the filler attached to the keel. Mine is too long and extends beyond the deck. Did you have the same problem and how did you shorten it?

2. I notice that your planking on the bow does not extend all the way and appears in pieces. Any reason for that?

Hope you can help me

Sy

The two filler blocks for the bow were a pain. I think I mentioned to you guys to just get a full balsa block and shape it. These two pieces basically help you curve the first layer planking to the bow. Maybe it's the kit I have but it had two pieces on each side to do this. Sy, were yours different? The instructions aren't very helpful.

As for the bow planking, I made a center line and a midsection line from port to starboard. This picture is just a capture of the process I was using. The planks were eventually tapered and used as a pattern for the rest of the deck. I used the planking pattern suggested by the kit but you can research many different ones. I felt this pattern was the most suitable for this scale.

Hope this helps

thanks Pete,

We moved into a new house in February during the winter, inspector cleared everything in the basement,  Well, this spring the snow melted and it rained a ton out here.  Little did I know the window well in my office was rotted and not installed correctly (it looked ok, a fresh coat of paint can do wonders!).  So, thus it started to get worse and I had a window guy check it out.  Replacing it in a few weeks but had to move everything out of there, kind of building in various areas of the house until then.  Also, I can't have the knives and glue sitting around because my wife does daycare, so my model building has taken painful delay.  To make it worse my Lobster Boat got damaged in the move so I will fixing that as well!

Here is a question for anyone who can help, should I brush paint the hull or should I use an air brush?  Cannot figure out which one will look better.

If you have an airbrush go ahead and use it.  Once you tape and mask everything the actual painting will be done in less than 1/2 the time.

Hi Casey,

I would definitely use an air brush. You won't have to worry about the uniformity of the paint. The coat will be nice and smooth giving the hull a cleaner look.

That's my 2 cents. : )

Well, it's been a while but I got this ship going again. Decided on a darker shade of yellow, "sunflower" for the stripe. The railing was a slight pain but a lot of water and jigs helped out. I was worried about the rudder but it went fairly smooth.

Thanks. I need to build a base for the ship. I really didn't like the one that came with the kit. Last night I sprayed primer on about 100 small metal parts, hopefully this week I'll have her close to ready for rigging.

I did for the white, the yellow and black I used a brush. This the third time I've brush painted a wood ship, it looks pretty good. For plastic and metal parts I only use airbrush. Brush strokes don't show up as much on wood. Also, the small areas are more accessible with a brush unless you want constantly tape off the wood sections. Just my preference though.

The top rail with the walnut strip covers looks well finished but the picture isn't the best for that area

Did you put a walnut strip on the very front of the bow and how did you finish off the top of the bow. The picture on the box cover seems to show an elevated cap. Is that correct

the bow will look elevated once the bow spirit is attached I am guessing, I have to paint more on the front yet.  I think I am going to paint the whole this black instead of leaving the unpainted strip.

I still have figure out what to do with the railing ends with the walnut.

  • 1 year later...

Finally after a year I can start back on the ship!  I have made some vast improvements since my last post, here is one where I am almost done with the cabin.  I am not too happy with the doors but my scratch wood ones looked too much like a toy, so I am going to paint the metal stock ones.

I must admit this build has been tougher than I expected.  The parts are very small and very difficult to work with at my level of experience.  The positive is that I am learning a ton from this build, can't wait to get it set for rigging.  That will be quite the challenge.

Scotland Baltic

Hey guys.

Iv just purchased my very first model ship, I went with the Corel Scotland Baltic.

Apon viewing some of the forums on here I hope I havnt got myself in to deep, there seems to be a lot of dialog that frankly bewilders me on first reading anyhow I was hoping someone could help me out with a detailed list of tools, jigs, sandpaper, clamps, glues and anything else I may require to get me started also any other advice you may think relevant before I launch into it. I'll post a pic of what I have brought in a little starter kit.

From what I have read this sounds like an enjoyable hobby and one that people are willing to help you out with along the way, I look forward to the process and talking with fellow enthusiasts.

TIA for any help.

Brad.

Oh and and sry if this post is in the wrong place im still trying to navigate my way around this site.

Any help on that front would be appreciated too.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just noticed this last night reading the manual, the 0.5mm string needs to be painted black according to Corel.  Not going to happen.  Looks like I am going to go shopping for some rope.

tasanhalas - use the same wood as you used for railing, 2x5mm or 2x4mm beech wood.  just cut out the notches with a blade, fairly easy
