Yes, nice looking frame jig. That's one thing that I didn't do. Wish I had. Your build is looking great. Looking forward to seeing more.

Three frames raised thanks to the good wishes from you all.

Spend the glue drying time to make myself a mini bench saw based on  my lathe which is the remains of an Emco Rex combination machine that fell off my truck

.My old 10 Inch Rockwell is just not accurate  enough for modelling.

Looks great Marius.  You might think about putting spacers near the top of the frames (between or just above the gunports works well) to hold everything in position during fairing.  The spacers can then either be planked over or removed when you're done.

All framed up with spacer Blocks glued in.

There is one frame that is going to give me fairing problems. Contemplated  redoing but I used epoxy glue on frames and Keelson. Will have to find a way to get around it.

A man at my age should get somebody to do it for him.

Sanding is for me the worst part of modelling.  Especially since I am not very good at fairing.

But its got to be done.

Thanks Guys.

Fairing nearly done. Had to go a bit thin on a couple of frames. Woud'nt like to put her on the water.

Just paying now for not leaving enough leeway on the frames.

  • 4 weeks later...

I have been quit but not totally idle.Had a cataract operation with a bit of a complication but now OK again.

Planked the inner Hull up to Lower Deck Clamps. I must have been careless with my measurements when resawing the planks and creeping error made me lose one plank.

Otherwise I am not too unhappy with the results.

Started on the deck beams and also the cannons just to prevent boredom.

Gun barrel turned out of embuia which is a dark and dense wood. Not quite happy with the dimensions  of the barrel. will redo.

Marius..Glad to here your operation turned out okay

The planking looks very nice....I really like the contrast between the light and dark woods....

Gun carriages look nice also.....The barrell dimensions does look a little large... (just my opinion)  I have not looked at the gun prints yet

And I like your idea for bending the deck beams..... :dancetl6:   will file that one back to use when I get to that stage

Keep up the good work and looking forward to more.

Hi Pete

Thanks for the comment.

I was more interested in seeing if the embuia wood would work as i have no metal turning facilities. It is really only the back part that ooks a bit heavy. Will  get it right.

Thanks for the comments guys.

The embuia turns very well on the lathe. After sanding I just burnished it very lightly with a stick.

I tried at first to do the bending round nails driven into a piece of scrap but they came out with an uneven curve.

I took the first ones out of this jig and they look great.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi

Made some headway the last week.

Planking done on the outside. South African Yellowwood.

I am leaving the strip on the port side open to show the frame structure.

Just wiped some sanding sealer on the planking for Protection.

Also started on the framing for the lower deck. South African White Pear for the beams and Japanese Birch for the Carlings and Ledges. Embuia for the wales.

All natural colours and resawn from scrap timber.

I seem to have lost some camber on the Beams. Maybe my bending method is not suitable for the White Pear.

Marius, she's looking very good.

That's interesting about losing some of the camber in the pear wood. I still think your jig for setting the beams is a good one and like you say maybe it's just the wood. I haven't decided the wood I'll use for the beams myself, although I'm using cherry for the frames and may try to stay with it. I'm thinking its a good time to make the jig and begin testing some wood to see how well it holds the camber. Maybe I’ll try setting the pattern to over bend just a tad.

Hi Christian, Pete & Paddy

Thanks for the comments.

Paddy I think my mistake was in soaking the beams in hot water for only 10 mins.  Overbending slightly also seems a good idea.

Shall soak for at least 1 hour  in future.

I also forgot to mention that I made the tenoned joints in situ.  I personally feel better when I can see where the joint has to go instead of getting nasty surprises later. I have not been able to get Exacto knives here. The local variety of blades I find to flexible fo accurate cutting. Will have to find suitable alternatives.

As you can see I have not done any treenailing. Cannot find drawplates for wood among our local merchants. One must remember that the market for specialised hobby tools is very limited in South Africa. Too late for the ceiling planks. But I will experiment with other methods to find a solution.

Maruis, if I may, check to see if Excel blades are available to you. They are far superior to Exacto

IMO and come in the usually assortment from #11 to chisel types.

A suggestion about the treenails. I am fortune enough to have a Byrnes draw plate which I am using to pull .039 bamboo nails for the frames but I have started testing the possibility of using colored paste for wood for smaller treenails and those that maybe difficult to reach. After applying one coat of finish I drill the hole and then fill with the paste, which is non-harding, wipe the excess off with a soft cloth, then put another finish coat over that. In this case I have been using Watco’s Danish Oil Neutral. I’m liking how this looks so far and will try more tests using larger bores of .039. Just a thought you may want to test.

P.S. Thanks for the recommendation to increase the soak time of the timber.

Paddy thanks for your input. Will try the fake treenails with some filler that is for sale here.
