Hello

Started this about 2 years ago. Building this was only possible by learning from all the great builds on this forum - so thanks to all of you.

To date have done the Yards with Stirrups and Footropes. Pictures soon.

Kiwiron (Ron), Augie, Hamilton, ZyXuz - Thank you all for looking in and your kind comments - much appreciated.

At last some photos of yards and some balsa pieces used to attempt to get the footropes equal and a pair of round nose pliers to bend the wire for the stirrups which I imagine everyone has......

Thanks Frank - early on today was showing a friend your Supply as I was impressed with the sails you have done - thought it really brought the ship alive.

Anyway thanks for looking in.

Hi Doug she's looking great, nice job.Have a look at plan sheet 4,Foremast mast top at the rear of it you need to pass a rope down from the top crosstree down the back of the mast to the base of the mast.I ended up having to drill an awkward hole through the mast top, better now than when i had to do it.

Thanks Ron  - Have already drilled holes on both masts - hopefully thinking this is what you meant - the plans are a bit tricky.....

Again that was a nice photo of your Supply - maybe they should run a competition on here for the 'best picture of the month'

Stockholm tar & Hamilton - thanks for your nice comments - they help to keep one going when it gets tough especially fiddling with the ratlines / deadeyes.....

Thanks

Doug

Good one on the mast top holes,in this picture of the foremast not sure if you can see the hole i had to drill but the thread goes through that single block and down.I'll need to do a hole on the mainmast as well looking at sheet 5.If you're not sure where things go look at the plan sheets 4,5,6.I have'nt done this enough.Just get your shrouds tight, you can pull them in just under the mast tops like i did i think it's called the cartherpins.

I can now see what you were saying Ron - Thank you - Did think originally the 'rope' went through the slot / gap by the side of the mast but that I realize it would mean that it would have to 'bend around', so it would make sense to make a hole so the 'rope' would travel straight to the fixing at bottom of mast.

On bending the mast while tightening the deadeyes - tied the back stays on opposite side down first so when working on the other side there would be hopefully not be any bending....

Struggling with the 3.5mm deadeyes...

Good job on your deadeyes Doug, nice and level,i was glad to finnish those 3.5mm ones, difficult alright.I had most of my mast bending from about half way up,another thing to watch on the next one.

  • 1 month later...

Taken quite some effort but finally have completed one set of shrouds with ratlines plus futtock throuds with the catharpins. Tying the knots was nice but getting all the tensions right with the ratlines and futtock throuds with the catharpins was a nightmare.....and there is more of them to do....

In helping with getting the tension good with the catharpins I used hooks on the ends of them - one end tied and glued whereas at the other end knots were left unglued so the correct length could be obtained (as photo). Also using hooks made it a lot easier and helped with tying everything on the futtock stave as it was getting quite crowded on there.

Also the futtock throuds were not looped around the stave but just tied to the lower throuds. Technically not correct but it was the only way I could think of to keep it neat and simple.....(at least as neat as I could do)

Doug,

Good job on your masts and shrouds, where you certainly overcame a few problems! Your deadeyes look good too. I think Supply is going to be a first class model. :)

Thank you - Hamilton, Stockholm tar, Riverboat, Dubz, Kiwiron for dropping in and having a look and thank you all for your comments. Noticed on my photos some end knots have come untied so it looks I have a few more problems to overcome........clipping the ends off seems difficult - too much it comes undone ( maybe not enough glue) and not enough thread cut off and the knot looks untidy .....

One more step forward - Ratlines complete along with the bowsprit attached - gammoning plus chain instead of thread.

Yards temporary attached with a pin - helps to feel how much has been done although all the blocks hanging around it makes it obvious how much more there is to do :)

She looks great Doug,i like your bowsprit chain. One more stage done there's plenty left alright.Good time to count up how many more blocks you need going by the plans plus a few extra,i needed more 3 and 5mm single blocks and ran out of .5mm natural thread.I wish i attached the gaff a lot later but it is pretty tough.I'm just re working the ships boat stand i kept leaning on it and breaking it.My hands are still tied in knots after the last session.Good luck.

Thanks Ron - already had to buy more of everything - especially 0.25 black thread.......and yes constantly glueing things back on or touching up with paint - probably built this boat a couple of times now...

I've given up on re-glueing and paint touch ups until it's finnised. You will have 2 violin blocks spare.I like your wooden display base, where did you get that from?Any photo's of mine that can help you please let me know, mine has got a few deviations to the plans but in 100 years who will know.

I seem to have a silly dilemma and was wondering if there is anyone who can help, please.

On plan 4 and it shows the Main Stay should be in 1.25 black rigging thread. Caldercraft / JoKita instructions say use 1.25 natural and stain black. Okay - but no 1.25 natural thread was supplied and Caldercraft etc do not do 1.25 natural thread as I can see......Bought 1.3 black but looks far too hefty so should I just use 1.0 black thread although I would like to use something a little heavier. In the meantime am awaiting on some brown 1.2 thread which if it seems okay will dye black.

Was just wondering what others have done with the same silly problem. Thank you

regards

Doug

Hi Doug,I just used 1mm black from the kit,a bit stupid telling you to use something not supplied.I don't think anyone at Jotika has actually made the Supply from their instructions or supplied parts.Lots of mistakes in it thats why i went to Occre great instructions and all parts supplied.Good luck.ron.
