Herreshoff 12 1/2 ( proto-type) By Pete48 - SMALL 3/4" = 1' - 0 " - Finished

Recommended Posts

This Morning I awoke 3 hours earlier than normal for me. ( this is either a Good thing or not ) I choose for it to be a good thing. I decided to put my theory to the test by build a Proto-type Herreshoff 12 1/2 , at 3/4" = 1' - 0 "using the L. Francis Herreshoff Buzzards Bay 14 ftr as a base line, in wich He had lengthend his Fathers version of the 12 1/2 with the same beam, I decided to shorten the frame spacing from 18" to 16" thus giving me a 12' - 6" waterline .(reversing what L. Francis had done ) and in theory giving me the original 12 1/2 . I am using the Herreshoff Buzzards Bay 14 ftr plans as well as photos and other information that I have gathered as my reference's. Here are some pic's of what I am going for. I feel pretty good about this build

I first started by laying out the keel on 1/8" X 4" X 12" basswood in the same fashion that I lofted the drawing ( this way I could double check my Math ) I then laid out the Stern Post and Cockpit Floor wich is 1' - 0 " ( scale ) lower than the Buzzards Bay 14 ftr. This was one of the things that I wanted to do differently while building the Buzzards Bay 14 ftr. The other thing, was that I made sure that I figured in the notch on the Stern Post for the Transom . Then I cut it out,  squared it up  and made a building Jig . I then layed out the Frames and then cut them out. These are the same size Frames as the Buzzards Bay 14 ftr .( I have not changed the offset table just the frame spacing ) Here are the results

Thank you Omega1234,  the Herreshoff 12 1/2  is a beautiful boat that I have always wanted ( since I was a kid ) the Buzzards Bay 14 ftr. is as nice as well , But there is just somthing about the Original that just grabs you. My goal is to try and capture that essence. and my calculations seem to be working out.

Best Regards,

Pete

Today, I finished trimming up the frames that I had cut then fit them in the keel. I did end up cutting 6" (Scale ) off the seat top and adding 4" ( Scale ) it to the notch for where the transom sits.other than that the Calculations seem to be good and on track to having the 12 1/2.  I then dry fit all the frames in the Keel ( and for illustration purposes, I am using the Rudder in the jig to hold up the transom ) Next will be to figure out and lay out the bench seats in the Cockpit.  then cut them out as well as cutting in for the Ribbands. Here are the results, ( one shot has Her next to Her big sister )

I did not have alot of time today to work on anything big, So I decided that I would replace frames 4 and 9 . Frame 4 has a 2" (Scale ) rise at the center of the frame wich is the top of the deck camber, frame 9 has 1" camber . Thats the nice thing about building the Buzzards Bay 14 ftr.first , I can change things at this stage alot easier . Here are the results

Michael, I did loft a few of the frames at 1 1/2" = 1' - 0"  and at that size would make a realy nice rc boat. ( I have thought about it )

Bob, Thank you for the kind words,  Sleep whats that ( LoL ) I am fortunate that right now I have time to work on these

Pete,

one could fall in love with the lines of those keelboat daysailers.

If I had known at that time that this build (in actual) was on the market I would have bought it instead of my Cornish Cormorant way back in 1987

Today, I started by setting up the building jig . Next I cut out the Cockpit details on frames 5 thru 8 . Then I started setting frames by Squaring them up with the Backbone and Level with the water line. ( so far She's right on the money ) Next will be to Fair the Frames , and get ready for Planking. Yesterday I started Fairing the Frames , Then I decided to Remodel the Lobster Smack Buid Jig to so that it is now my Herreshoff 12 1/2 build jig ( It is a very flat very, stable build board and will work perfect for the next build ) Today I started to finish the Fairng of the frames and Frame 9 broke off , after that I realized that Frame 8 had not been detailed for the cockpit. I was fortunate that I was able to take care of that before Planking, after the 2 fixes I finished Fairing the Frames . She is right on the Money the numbers are comming out perfect and she is now ready for planking . Here are the results

Today, I started planking the Hull . First I soaked my planking material in Rubbing Alcohol . I soaked them for about an hour and a half. This way, I can achieve maximum flexability with the ability to attach them more quikly ( as alcohol evaporates faster than water ) I was able to get the first 5 rows on, She is looking alot like Capt' Nates 12 1/2 . Everything is right on the numbers ( I am pleased ) Here are the results

Thank you Bob, Thats funny I built that little vice out of old C-clamp when I was building the Midwest Lobster Smack . You comented on it back then , I don't use it as much as I thought I would .  Mainly I use it for Holding parts while I fabricate ( it is handy at times ) I am hoping to finish planking today, it will be close

Today , I was able to get another 4 rows of planking on.  That has been some of the toughest wood bending that I have ever done on a model before. The Seams are all nice and tight Shes starting to take shape, and I understand now why the 12 1/2's have been refered to as a Doughdish. Here are the results
