Rigging Book Recommendation

I was doing some research on rigging books, and I think I've narrowed it down to two selections. I'd like to pick up copies of Rigging Period Ship Models by Petersson, and the fourth book in the Swan series The Fully Framed Model: Rigging a Sixth Rate Sloop of War 1767-1780.

 

Ideally I'll be getting both books at some point, but for those familiar with the two books, can you recommend one over the other for a first purchase? Or perhaps another book that would serve me even better? These will be used when I go to rig the HMS Snake 1797 kit.

Petersson is excellent, I would also recommend "The young Sea Officer's sheet anchor" by Darcy Lever, both are the right time period for Snake - both a good value for money.

Ditto to 'Rigging Period Ship Models' by Lennarth Petersson. An excellent resource. Shop around though as prices really vary. I got my copy from an Australian Website called - www.thenile.com.au It was only $37.00 au and is still available. They have a range of Peterssons other books on sale as well. I don't know where you are from because you don't say in your profile. The book ships from the UK so if you are interested check the site out. I couldn't find it cheaper anywhere else.

Book "Rigging Period Ship Models"

 

What I like in Petersson`s book and can recommend, are the lots self explaining scetch Pictures (actualy illustrations only, no text), in all very informative and in Addition to the shipmodels rigging plan, in every way worth its Price and is fun studying.

What I was missing is the rigging of Yards in braced Position, maybe Petersson would like to make an appropriate ammendment in the follow issues of this book

I have Petersson and TFFM and they are super, especially TFFM.   My fall back is James Lees' Masting and Rigging  as he addresses lines, line sizes, blocks, the works, for any size British Warship between 1625 and 1860.

I'd say Petersson as the first as well.  TFFM is very good if you are planning to add sails to your build.

 

On my Badger, I started with Petersson to get a visual of the rigging, and then used TFFM for the details.  For what it's worth, I think Petersson is available on the web somewhere - not sure if it is a permitted or otherwise authorized publication or not, but I think I've seen people post link to those sites here.

I believe the version of Petersson on the web is a pirated version.

Yeah, I had seen the version on the web of Peterssons book, and saw how great it was. So I've actualy ordered a real copy of it to support the author.

I'm really starting to get a better handle on the rigging and sails now. The mists of confusion are slowly fading away, and what was once a warren of random ropes is become thoughtfully laid out assemblage of stays, ratlines, preventers, and all manner of other line. Still plugging away on the rest of research as well, so hopefully my build will start in the next few months.

 

Although the frequent dips into the tales of Aubrey and Maturin slow me down at times!
