Pandora by Omega1234 - Cutaway Dockyard Style miniature - Finished

Hi everyone

 

My miniature version of Pandora (using Anatomy of the Ship plans) was started about 5 years ago, but to this day, remains semi-completed. The reason for not completing it was ...yep...you guessed it...I got scared of doing the masting and rigging! This, in spite of building the Victory as well as Bounty and Lennox, all of which were three masted ships with extensive rigging! You'd think I wouldn't have any problems and would be eager to rig this model, but, to no avail.

 

One day I will finish her...I promise.

 

In the meantime, I'll update the build log with more instalments over the next few days.

The Pandora is an interesting build. What is the scale and what kind of wood did you use for the framing? She is looking very good.

Many thanks.  I believe the scale was 1/96, because it was the same size as the AOTS plans.  The size of the ship is almost exactly 12.5 inches long, with a beam of 2.5 inches.  The frames were laminated from walnut strips, whilst the deck beams and sundry bits and pieces were made from jarrah.  The deck planks were made from birch veneer.

Hi Patrick,

 

You have an amazing amount of detail in a ship that small. I built one at 1/48 scale and had trouble with my big fingers and the small parts. You have probably noticed a lot of the details in the AOS book have the wrong scale in the description just use your best judgment as to the size of the parts.

Mike - you're right about the differing scales in the AOTS book...took me a while to figure that one out, but all was good in the end!

 

Bob - thanks for your comments as well. In terms of learning, I've learnt buckets from your models, especially the masting and rigging, so to hear your comment is a huge compliment! I have to admit, Bob, my stove doesn't look anywhere near as good as yours in your Friendship Sloop, though.

Bob-Thanks once again. I understand what you're saying about 'nerves', but what I've seen of your ships, especially the metal work, windlass, fabrications, etc, I've got a long way to go...!

This is the last lots of photos of Pandora. As you can see, the hull has been completed. All that's really left to do is rig the masts and spars. One day...one day...

My first thought is, 'come on you need to finish her'.  Then I remember the things left undone on some of my "finished" boats.  Looking again, She's a fine example of your amazing skill and could be put on display as is. Thanks for showing the pictures.  They are much enjoyed.

Thanjs for the compliments, which are greatly appreciated. I’m glad that my photos have been able to help you, but the ladders are just as they were positioned in the Anatomy of the Ship book, (which I slavishly followed, whether rightly or wrongly). 

 

Nonetheless, you’re doing a great job on your Oliver Cromwell. Pls keep the updates flowing.
