Besides a book is more handy in the bed before going to sleep.... a screen will hurt more once it falls to your head.

Even though Gary is doing a superb job, it almost seems that the instructions build the model themselves.

AL don't seem to say which.

When building the San Felipe with sails set, I had more force pulling the yards up than down. I couldn’t remove the slack without raising the yards too much. I had to drill the mast and yard and place a brass pin to hold the yard at the correct height. The brass pin cannot be seen. I don’t know if that is an acceptable remedy but it worked. I was able to get the tension in the ropes. I don’t remember whose build log a got this idea from. It’s been too long.
_________________
Bender

Anthony,
I think the whitish wood is Costello. I may be in trouble here but I believe the latin name is Gossypiospermum praecox. My book goes on to describe it as "Boxwood, West Indian, coming from Venezuela & the West indies. The wood is the same family as the elm", so therefore is it really box?

Don't get me wrong, Costello is a lovely wood but seems to go under the name of Box by most of the lumber dealers.

Hi Jan,

Thanks for you quick reply!

I really like the ships from the VOC era. So wood, sails and alot of rigging .

My budget moneywise I don't really know what is reasonable but lets say inbetween 100-200 euro's max.

Time and space: well I have the weekends and evenings mostly and I'm planning on buying a new desk that is 80 cm deep and about 160cm in length.

Thanks for the tip on the store I'll drop by next time I'm in Utrecht(I'm doing my internship atm).

The tools sound managable but what kind/and size I need are still a mystery do you meen army knife size or smaller? Also the glue's. Would a normal wood glue do?

Quote:

(woodedn clothing pegs will do the job perfectly)

Do you meen and pardon the dutch knijpers by that?

As you see I'm really clueless haha!
Guys,
We're getting old.
My students told me this morning that internet has the truth. No need to question the information on the net: "Were would we be if we can't trust internet?"
Another quote: "No need for books, everything is on-line nowadays"
(and believe me, there was not the slightest hint of cynicism in this students )

Bill, I have no problem with glassing the inside; that wasn't my original concern but somehow we got caught up in it. I can get spruce strips locally at the hobby shop, but they're short pieces and horribly expensive. I think I'll just go ahead and buy 1/8x3/16 basswood on line. It'll take about 150 LF to finish, so I'll buy maybe 25' to see how it goes. Limit my losses.

The source of the plans that you mention is where I got mine from. I also hve that article. What stopped you from building her?

Thanks,
_________________
Rich

In 100 years it won't matter how much you had in the bank, what kind of car you drove. or how big your house was, but the world will be a different place because you were important in the life of a child.
Deniz,
Your build of the Astrolabe is coming along really well. I think you have shown great progress in the way you are approaching the build and the quality of the model. Keep up the good work.

Hi Anthony,

Welcome to a nice hobby.
A kit is a nice place to start: lots of thinking has been done for you. (although kit designers do not always come up with the best solution )
You're a beginner, so take an entry level kit.
Next question: what type of ship do you like (never start something you don't like)
Next question: how's your budget (in money and in time and space)
Next: drop in at the shop in the Minderbroederstraat (downtown Utrecht, you should be able to find it). Not a shop with a great assortment nor the best of service, but it wil allow you to have a look in the box of a couple of kits. (they have the Artesiana entry level kits, some really nice ones in that range)
Next (and decisive): make your choice and buy (not necisarily at the forementioned shop, they tend to be expensive )
With respect to tools: some knives, a small dril, glue and lots of clamps. (woodedn clothing pegs will do the job perfectly) a little saw (no need to go for the top-end machinery for your first kit)

Jan
Fraco,
Your build is coming along nicely. I like the colour of your deck-what finish did you use ? Keep up the good work.
