Subject: Static: Mantua ARM 82
Posted: Thu Aug 28, 2008 1:45 pm (GMT 0)

This week I've been varnishing the ARM 82. Every night I've applied one fresh layer of varnish. After three layers, the ARM looks like this:

When the last layer is dried, I will apply one or two layers of shiny transparent colorless varnish on the hull.

In this painting phase of the project I need a lot of patience...I can't wait to continue the build

Regards, Rinie
_________________
Current project: Mantua ARM 82

@Drake: Thanks, It's a lot of reading and it's true that changing parts of a ship into items a person themselves creates, put a personal stamp on a model!

Thanks for the nice comments guys.

Yes you should get across here and see her for yourself, pictures are OK but nothing beats the real thing (I have three Aussie relatives here at the moment as it happens)

Trincomalee... http://public.fotki.com/garycaine/

P.S. for those who are not familiar with 'Fotki', if you click on a thumbnail a larger image will be diplayed, underneath which, in blue writing it will say 'Get Original Uploaded Photo' if you click on that it will take you to a much larger version of the image, and if you click on that it will be displayed in it's origional size.....................does this make any sense ?

Great photos.

But if I select and display an individual photo, when I click on it, it moves me to the next photo rather than offering me 'Get Original Uploaded Photo'

bob h

Sorry about that, I must have got it wrong, it seems that option is only available to me as the account holder, but if there are any pics in particular you would like to see in their full resolution just send me a PM with your e-mail addy and the picture number and I'll send them to you.
Brilliant photos, thank you for sharing these with us. Almost enough there to make a good super detailed model. Do you know the story on the damaged model shown towards the end at all.

Dirk

Sorry, but no, I think it was put there as part of the display to make it look as if one of the crew were making a model in their free time (if they had any) The one in the case is of course the Trinc.

Smee,

Your plan for adding the bearding sounds fine. The forward edge of the stern frames will always be correct as it does not get any chamfer (fairing as we say) Then just work your way back taking off enough at the sternpost that the planks will sit flush.

It's worth clamping something square to the frames to ensure they stay square while the glue is setting. people use all sorts of things from engineering squares to lego.

Good start. Thinking is important.

And I see Uwe is still finding enigmatic vessels of one kind or another!

I think this maybe the world's first passenger submarine the mesocaphe Auguste Piccard designed by the Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard.

Lindsay

Yes Lindsay, and also after some research also yes to adrift, who mentioned already the name correctly!

Our mystery ship is the submarine Auguste Piccard (PX-8), often also named Mésoscaphe,
built by Jaques Piccard and named after his father.....

It was built during the years 1962 to 1964 and was during the "country Exhibition of Swiss in Lousanne.
The August Piccard was the biggest privately built submarine ever and also the biggest not military one.

It had space enough for 40 passengers and made up to 9 divings per day,
so in total during the year 1964 she was diving 1.100 times in the lake Geneve with total 33.000 people.
Later she was used also in Marseille and in Vancouver.

Here you can find a more detailed history of the submarine:

http://www.speedylook.com/M%C3%A9soscaphe_Auguste_Piccard.html

And here a very interesting film (45 minutes) showing the submarine "in action" as well as some interviews etc. with Piccard:

http://mediaplayer.archives.tsr.ch/innovation-mesoscaphe/2.wmv

So I think adrift was correct and should show us the next mystery ship
_________________
Uwe

In the pipe/preparation: Leut, La Diligente (ancre) and Triton (complete built)

You are very close to the solution, but Piccard was the name of the owner and user,
but the submarine (Piccard owned several) had a specific name?

The sheer clamps were glued on to the upper edge of the side hull panels. These sheer clamps are added to provide extra area for gluing and nailing the deck to the hull. They are placed ¼ inch proud to the top of the side panels so that the radius of the deck camber can be planed into them later in the assembly process. The side panels were placed back to back and clear plastic sheeting was put between them. The same mustard consistency epoxy/cell-o-fill mixture was made and applied to the sheer clamps and side panels. Every clamp and clip in the shop was used to ensure a tight bond.

I think that all of us should be carefull not to become discouraged by seeing the fantastic skill levels on display and feeling that our efforts are poor and not worth pursuing. I'm working off a kitchen table, in probably better circumstances than most as I'm retired, but I still have to remind myself that my skill levels are improving all the time, especially after I have made a mistake, been honest enough with myself to acknowledge it and re-do the work.

Regards, Rinie

Friends,

I also fully agree with the above mentioned

You should have in mind every time:
1) In comparison with some of the master modelers we learn much more per day than them,
means our improvement is growing much faster
2) MSW is very happy that we have several world-class modelers in our membership, modelers which are sharing their knowledge with us.
In this way the "normal" modeler is able to see the possibilities and can also improve partly his techniques.
3) The professionals are making modeling as a job, every day every "working hour",
so therefore their workshop has to better equipped, their experience has to be much bigger than of the "normal" modeler!

The most important thing is that we enjoy the hobby and have fun!
_________________
Uwe

Subject: Ships Log 28th. August

Ships Log 28th. August, 2008
Position: Within rowing distance of Pub
Progress: Half a league out & nearly half a league back!
Weather: Some nasty squalls struck ere we had made the harbour mouth, a number of timbers have been shook loose. Had to wear ship and anchor back in harbour- rowed to pub for ships complement conference.

Carefully read and re-read the first few paragraphs of instruction book? Studied drawings and, when I felt that familiarity had been established - got my grubby little fingers on some bits of wood! All parts numbered in pencil and removed from the main ply sheet. There are two parts on the sheet which are not on the drawing, hmmmm-sort that one later, also the ply de-laminated when one part was removed- not a good omen! This laser cutting is good stuff, how nice and clean. Tags smoothed off and bulkheads and half-decks dry assembled on keel.
Stap me sir! It`s all slacker`n Gerties knickers! (1st. squall)
No rabbet or bearding line!
(2nd. Squall).
Some of the `not quite right` matters are being identified. No semblance of deck planking-plywood decks?? arrrrrrgh!!! The wheel doesn’t do anything, there is no tiller rope on the barrel!
Adhering to my version of the old adage `measure twice and cut once`- `measure and think quite a lot before cutting or glueing`, I thereby justified the decision to row back to pub.
1st. thought for the day:- The rabbet and bearding line. They need to be put in, for a start the planking, as shown on their diagram, just comes to an abrupt end just where the sternpost would be if there was one, the whole keel structure- including sternpost-is all one piece of ply; leaving the end-grain of the planks exposed! Also I need to carry out this operation for my own experience and satisfaction. How to do it? There is a rabbet/ bearding line of sorts on the side elevation but there is no way that I am going to trust this! Shall I try removing rabbet after hull is assembled and frames chamferred or shall I mark position of frame bottoms on keel and use a flexible curve to draw in the lines ( making appropriate adjustments for the fact that frames will be unchamferred). I am rather inclined to the latter.
I must say that keeping this log literally as I go is helping me think things through. This might be an original `tip for the inexperienced`. There would have been a problem with the bearding line at the bow but fortunately there is a sort of knighthead or hawsepiece timber which attaches each side of the stem piece and provides the profile. (see photo)
2nd. thought :- The whole hull structure is supposed to be stabilised by virtue of the half-decks which we are instructed to insert before the glue sets in the frame/keel joints. The dry-run reveals that, although there is a lot of movement in the fore and aft plane, there is not a lot in the athwartships plane when the half-decks are in position but the frames will `wiggle` quite a bit. I have already decided to use araldite in these joints by virtue of its` gap-filling properties. There are 10 frames so my plan is to glue the frames and install the half-decks dry just to stabilise the frames while the glue dries, I think the araldite will remain workable of long enough. (I HOPE). Even with the half-decks in place and clamped there is still some twist so, after some experimentation I think I will stand the assembly inverted, supported by the foremost and sternmost frames while it dries. This will also stabilise the sternmost frame which is the most wobbly and cause for a bit of concern. I will be able, then, to check keel for verticality with a square. Individual frames I will check for square to the keel by eye, I have a pretty good one!
O.K. shipmates I`m off to skin me rabbet.

Have you taken pictures during the build of this model?

Hi Drake,

That's a point, yes: Corel uses 'half' guns that are fixed in little holes, you need to fix the little pipes.
Painting will require a steady hand and a small paintbrush....
Hello Jan,

Thank you for your remark!
I left the 15*2mm plank unpainted because
I have to glue the dummy gun-extensions to it.
The glue doesn't fit well on a painted surface.
After glueing these parts, I paint them black.
It's going to be a difficult job because of the narrow place.
_________________
Kind regards,

Hi,
I have been making her for 20 months. She is my second wooden ship. I have made about five plastic models from manufacturer Revell and Heller. First wooden ship (Havets Vinthund - IGRA) I made when I was 12 years old then there was a long pause (just plastic kits were done) and then came Caroline (now I am 24 years old). Here are building logs of what I have made if you are intrested.

Plastic kits:
HMS Victory - Revell
http://modelforum.upce.cz/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=3188
HMS Bounty - Revell
http://modelforum.upce.cz/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=3084
Le Glorieux - Heller - not acomplished
http://modelforum.upce.cz/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=3389
Mayflower - Revell I don't have any photos of this build

Wooden kits:
Havets Vinthund - IGRA

Revenge - IGRA (this is my wooden model Ihave started before RC, but it is still not finished)
Thank you for your encouragement. Sometimes, when I compare my build to the work of the professional modellers here on the forum I can get over-critical of myself.

But the occasional compliment does help and is very welcome!.

This President was never sailing! You are right......

and the kit is definitely not representing an accurate and technical or historical correct vessel of this or any time period!

It is a low price kit prepared by the manufacturer partly with elements already in stock,
therefore the parts are also partly not in correct scale!

No research costs, less preparation costs with using "old" and available parts,
reduced details => low price level is possible !

But with some work and adjustments you can build a nice model,
a model of a sailing war ship
_________________
Uwe

In the pipe/preparation: Leut, La Diligente (ancre) and Triton (complete built)
Under Construction: H.M. Bomb Vessel Granado (Jotika) and HMS Triton Section (scratch built) Building log
Completed: H.M. Yacht Chatham and H.M. Mortar Vessel Convulsion (both Jotika)
Hi Skyfire

Thanks for the link to your build log - your work looks great so far. I wish colleges in the States would offer the kind of course you have found.

The scale of the MS Bluenose is 1:64 - this'll make for a larger finished product than the Amati, I think.

The problem is guys that I cannot find anywhere any information concerning any vessel which this kit is alleged to typify. It appears to be a total figment of somebodys imagination. As I said it does not even qualify as a 6th. rater so what is it? and where can I find out about whatever, in real life, it is supposed to represent? I have googled to death and come up with absolutely nothing! It is supposed to represent the period 1730-1760 according to the booklet but carronades were not used by the R.N. till much later-thats just for a start. Was there ever a vessel of around 100 feet armed with 12 carronades called a `light frigate`?
Tx for replies,
