Okay. Here is a jpeg, very poor resolution, of the prospective rig and the general deck plan. It is very rough and this is not very crisp. I resaved a pdf as a jpeg using Paint shop Pro.

Rich:
Yes, the mizzen is off center. Whomever built it originally did not drill the mast hole in the right place.

There is nothing to be done about it now unless I want to tear out the deck and I do not want to go that far. I will just have to do the best I can with the hole in that location.

I think they have lost touch with the real world. They should have considered the average age of the model ship builders, who on earth likes to wait for one year one could be dead before getting the first issue.

Thank you for your kind words.

Bread room is right. Were these rooms filled with cookies or bread? I do not know, but these rooms were covered with planks on which they apply a cloth coated with some kind of tar to cut humidity. My guess is neither cookies nor bread were store in these rooms. On the first deck, there is a bread oven and on the forecastle, there is a pastry oven.

Michael:
I appreciate the tip, but I do not know what that means or how to do it. I have looked through Adobe Acrobat's features I cannot find any camera function. I reckon I will not be able to do this based on what I am going through so far. Thanks though.

Nautical History :: Spray, Joshua Slocum single-handed sail around the world

Subject: Spray, Joshua Slocum single-handed sail around the world
Posted: Thu Jul 02, 2009 10:31 pm (GMT 0)

After reading the famous memoir "Sailing Alone Around the World (1899)" by Joshua Slocum about his single-handed global circumnavigation aboard the sloop Spray, I quite naturally got very interested in Spray design.
Slocum was the first person to sail around the world alone, and Spray was a real success as a ship. Slokam praised Spray design and its seaworthiness.

Interesting research of Spray design followed nowadays:

"An analysis by Howard I. Chapelle, curator of maritime history at the Smithsonian Institution and a noted expert on small sailing craft, demonstrated that the Spray was stable under most circumstances but could easily capsize if heeled beyond a relatively shallow angle. He felt that Slocum was merely lucky that his unstable vessel had not killed him earlier.[6]

Despite this, and other criticisms of the Spray design, many hundreds of Spray copies and several Spray replicas, are presently sailing on all oceans of the world. Indeed, there has been no recorded incident of a Spray design having been lost at sea with all hands since Joshua Slocum and Spray disappeared in 1909, and the general opinion of that is that basic seaworthiness was not an issue in the vessel's fate."

What in Spray design provided for:

- her to lay snug as a duck under a goose-winged mainsail when Slocum encountered gales and heavy seas?

- a remarkable self-steering ability that allowed her to run before the wind under her regular fore-and-aft rig with the helm lashed, and hold her course for hours or days on end?

Please help to find more detailed account of Spray design and seaworthiness, as well as plans and comprehensive descriptions of her rigging and other details to build Spray model from scratch.

Thanks!
Hey Ghostman,
I had a chance to sail on a battle cruise with Lady Washington on the Bill of Rights in '04. We had a great time. Had I known I would be building a model sailing ship then I would have spent more time shooting details instead of the crew in action. If anyone is in the same neighborhood when they come through its a day trip that is well worth the time.
Hi all,

Brand new here and I need some help. I've been asked to build a model of an 18th century Dutch Brigantine. Has anyone here ever seen plans for one?

I have searched for hours researching and came up with very little, not even a picture.

I found a Mantua model of the "Golden Star", which is British. How close is that?

thanks.
