Hi Guys,

I have decided to put a log on here for the remainder of my Royal Caroline build. I started working on this model around Christmas 2005 but stopped not long afterwards. I have picked it back up over the past couple of weeks and am rediscovering the joys.

Below are some pics.

Very Nice work!

Of course that photo of your workshop makes me jealous. I'm in a condo situation, without a spare room. So, a shed is out of the question for me despite their relative inexpensiveness about here. My workspace is my coffee table, which has to be picked up now and then when the girlfriend comes over.

A few questions, as I've looked at this kit before. Whats your opinion of the kit quality in general? Also, I notice that the red bulwarks looks more like stain than paint. What did you use?

Nice to see some posts of this kit!

Nice work. As Mr. Koopman stated, I am jealous too. You have a very nice workspace. Keep the posts coming.

Hi,
Nice looking model.
Looks as if you've trenailed the rubbing strake below those gilded gunports, plus in the larger photo, I think I can see some more nailing.
Any more pics of the hull?
cheers, Bernie

Hi, I do like this ship and not just because it shares my name! You're doing a good job, I shall enjoy following your progress.

Hi Guys,

thanks for all the supportive comment, always much appreciated. I have been using Enamel paint for all the colour. I dug the pots out after 4 years and the pigment has separated from the rest and so when it is put on it gives a really good finish and it dries ver quickly.

I treenailed the strakes on as I didn't want to paint them. The nails are cocktail sticks jammed into the holes and cut off.

I will post more pictures soon.

I have been away for awhile and did not see your post until today. I finished the Royal Caroline back in March. It is good to see another build. I noticed you asked a question in a different thread and Bizibilder already answered.

Hi again,

I have been doing some more work on the model and will be putting some more pictures up soon.

As for the quality of the kit. Hmm. As it is only the second kit I have built and both have been Mantua/Panart/Sergal my opinions may be biased but I shall give it a stab.

Instructions - Crap - the booklet is pretty useless and the translations from Italian are chimp-like. It has come in handy when some of the plan details are a little lacking. Work with the new etched wood is not covered in enough detail. There is 1 page with some doodles of how to paint it but that is all. Lits of parts is also guff with little hint as to what some of the bits and bobs are actually for

Plans - Good - lots of them. Nice large sheets with plenty of diagrams. No colour pictures to go with. Again no time spent discussing how to use the etched wood parts and often photo-etched brass is referred to. However, if time is taken to consider the plans before cutting then things can be sussed out pretty easily.

Materials - Very good - Plenty of wood, optional balsa planking which I did not use, will save for next model. Plywood pieces were straight and well made, quality of ply is good. Biggest gripe is the plywood parts for the windows on the sides of the model. Brass parts are nice, I like them shiny so it suits me well. Walnut is a little furry, that might just be the way it is but it annoys me. Has survived being stored for almost 4 years with nothing being done to it.

Overall - Pretty Good - I like it, suits me. A challenge in interpreting the instructions but the plans are nice. Historical accuracy can be called into question but if the process of building and creating a nice looking model is your focus then you can't go wrong here.

Just catching up on the build. Did I see some golf clubs in the back of your shed ? Looks like they are well protected.
The Royal Caroline is an interesting ship to build. Will continue to follow.
