Hi Garward,

I tried the ammonia once - it didn't work ...... maybe I used too weak a solution. Or the wrong type of ammonia.

I have a problem with the fumes as well - too many years of spray painting at work Crying or Very sad

A good read, Danny

Looks good Danny. I'd like to try ammonia but not sure concentrated ammonia is easy to get in Aus.
I remember (when I was about 12) asking at the pharmacy down the road for some Ammonia and some Iodine crystals.
The pharmacist told me he couldn't sell them to me because "some people would use those things to make explosives".... which was exactly what I wanted them for, of course! Laughing
cheers, Bernie

Danny,

Looking good! You seem to be getting more confident as a ship modeler and happy with doing what you find useful or what you find you like, as opposed to just assembling the pieces.

Just so you know - dissatisfaction with the kit supplied pieces is the first sign of scratchbuilditis. Soon you'll toss the horrible metal parts and build your own out of wood. Bernie is terminally affected Very Happy

Colin

PS. Steam is my current favourite bending technique.

If at first you don't succeed... do it your wife's way.
The problem with doing something right the first time is nobody appreciates how difficult it was.

Hi, Danny,
Bend of laths by means of ammonia - only one of numerous variants, I have applied it because did not wish to potter with a soldering iron, and the solution was near at hand. At you well it turns out by means of heating, there is no necessity to apply ammonia, especially, if a hypersensibility to its steams. Concerning concentration - I applied 10 % a solution.

Successes,

Thank you Garward,

I think it best for me to leave the ammonia alone, because of my problem with the fumes.

I've had a quick look through your Galleries of Corsair and San Fransisco - very nice work.

A good read, Danny

Or was it Condy's Crystals?

Nah! Condy's was for snakebite!
We used to have a "snakebite kit" (circa 1940?).
It was a little wooden stick.
At one end was a wooden cap that covered a small blade and the other had a similar wooden cap that held a small quantity of Condy's crystals.
If bitten, you were supposed to cut a line joining the puncture marks and tip in the Condy's. Shocked
I wish I still had the kit, it's probably a collector's item by now! Laughing
