Dear all,

I am currently busy with a scratch build of the Batavia. The commercial plans that are available is a bit above my price bracket, and seeing that I am a bit of a sucker for punishment Shocked , I decided to take the silly route of developing my own drawings. I did start with the set that I received from the “Batavia werf” in Lelystad.

I also purchased the 5 Cahiers that were published as well as downloading of all the info I could find of the specific ship.

I traced the relevant drawings and that gave me the keel, stem and stern posts. From those traces, I developed the detailed water lines. From these, I could develop a complete set of the frames of the ship. Up to this point, I was fine.

I reached the stage where I need to split the frames into their various components. I do have the approximate lengths of the various components. The issue that I am struggling with at his point in time is the gun ports. The futtocks terminate against the gun ports. That means that these are very important. This led me to a few questions:

1. The gun ports are 24 * 24 Amsterdam inches. Is this the total size of the ports, including or excluding the wood frame around them?
2. How do I accurately calculate the height of the port above the gun deck?
3. How do I accurately calculate the distance between the ports?

The ports terminate against the top timber of the frame on the aft side of the port. I am sure that I will have more questions as I go along and I hope that I will be able to ask them on this forum.

If anyone wants to take the discution off-line, please do email me directly and we can dicuss the issue.

May you all have a blessed day.

Just curiosity: what plans did you get from Lelystad? I tried to buy plans overthere, but they keep telling that there are no plans available any more Sad

Quite an impressive amount of work done then Smile Are we allowed to view some of it?

My (totally wild) guess would be that it is the distance between the futtocks that is meant. Are you sure that the gunports are square? General texts always claim that there is normally a 5:6 ratio (width:hight)

Smile Smile There is lots of discussion going on there. There are texts that tell us that the lower side of the gun port should be around 22 duim (i.e. 2 amsterdam foot) above the deck level.

3. How do I accurately calculate the distance between the ports?

general rule of thumb: three times the gunport width as a minimum. Lots of deviations known Smile

In real life it was the other way round: the position of the ports determined the position of the futtocks and top-timbers. That made it possible to put in the ports with minimum amount of loss of material.
Dutch ships where fully timbered aruond the ports: no spaces between the wood whatsoever. There is a log going on af someone using the name amazone. He is using the historical methods of building. (as far as possible at a small scale)

Hope this helps.

Hi Jan,

Thanks for the reply. I will post a few picks as soon as I worked out how. The drawings are on TurboCAD and can be exported to most formats including PDF.

I have also build a thickness sander, because the commercial ones are too fancy to my liking.

The building board is also nearly complete. I was told it is too complicated, but I think it will make the building process a lot simpler.
