I've got Wooden Ships and Iron Men also. Haven't played it in quite a few years. I found it was good for the situations with only a few ships on each side (< 10 or so) Some of the big scenarios that were essentially head on passes always ended up with whichever side was going upwind totally disorganized once one ship was damaged enough to stop it. You couldn't get around it to either windward or leeward and everyone just ran into the ship ahead and got fouled. Talk about a massive furball!!!! The system did make for some fun DYO though. We just spaced the ships a little farther apart than the historical scenarios did and it gave some room for maneuver.

I've played Wooden Ships and Iron Men long time ago. I was looking for a copy of it one time. I believe it was actually a re=release by Avalon Hill of a game called Beat to Quarters, but I can't remember the original publisher.

Ah, fun times! And, as wargames go, I don't think the rules were actually all that complicated. I seem to remember there was a basic rules system and an advanced system.

Speaking of complicated rules, I do have a copy of Harpoon rules that I've been looking at selling. It's in extremely good condition, though some of the books have been handled a bit. It includes one of the supplements and the counters are unpunched.
