Many thanks to Alexei Baranov for his illustrated sequence of operations for mass producing deadeyes. So, if you have a lathe, there is NO excuse not to! Laughing

Many thanks to Alexei for sharing and for Jim for showing us these detailed photo-tutorial......
without words it is everything clear and self-explanatory!

Let us hope that Alexei is in the next post showing how he is making the three holes in the deadeyes....
especially the used jig would be interested, and I am sure he is using a selfmade tool for this 8)

This is very similar to one of the methods proposed by Harold Underhill in his two volume work 'Plank on Frame Models', the other being the use of a drawer plate. At this size that would be an interesting exercise to say the least. He also proposes a jig to produce the holes.

This is pretty much what I intend to do on my current build, replacing the provided walnut deadeyes with deadeyes made from ebony, will save the messy paint job.

Anyway, it's good to see someone else use the same method, at least I know it works and produces a great end result.

Dave

You can grind a tool to do all three jobs in one.

Kerry.

G'Day Kerry,

Nice work as usual and a good idea of the all in one tool. How did you grind it so fine.

Dirk

Any problems with overheating of the cutting bit during grinding?
I tried one, and it became violet sort of and I am worried about steel loosing its characteristics.

Hello Jerzy,

Hold the bit in your bare fingers, right next to where you are grinding. If it gets too hot to hold, just dip it in water.

Your fingers will burn long before you have harmed the steel bit with heat.
