Dear all,

All of us, sooner or later we will have to deal with treenails.
Now it is my turn... Smile

Initially, I wanted to buy that little piece of metal with various holes, ( forget its name), but then I did not like the idea of spending some money and most important to wait the snail mail to reach me.

So I decided to find an alternative solution (plan B as we hear in the movies).

The inspiration came this morning and here it is as shown in the pictures.
I only used a scrap piece of aluminium.
I drilled three holes, 2.00 , 1.60 and 1.20 mm.
Then I did the following:

a) insert a toothpick in the dremel halfway.
b) insert the tip of the toothpick into the hole 1.6mm (the toothpick is 2.00mm already)
c) start your dremel at low speed trying not to bend the toothpick.
d) continue with the next hole of 1.2 mm.

remarks
The 2mm hole did not used at all.
do not force too much the toothpick, it is not really necessary.
Efficiency: 9 out of 10 toothpicks came out . the tenth was from bad bamboo.
Speed: from what I hear from other methods, it was rather quick, it took me only 5 minutes for those ten pieces. (I do not include in the time the drilling of the aluminium).

Stelios

PS The idea came from a tool shown in a hardware shop for tappering wood.
I will search the net and I will let you know the exact name.

Hi Stelios, great idea. How do you think it would go with smaller treenails though? Down to say .5mm for smaller models - sure save a lot of effort if it was "stable" at those sizes Smile

cheers
Pat

Hmmm...
I will give a try, however, the whole exercise will be only academical, because from what I understand from various discussions, treenails can easily be out of scale, and at smaller scales perhaps it is not worth the effort (I think).

Hi, Stelios!
In Russia we use syringe-needle with the edge in the form of king-crown for making thousands of tree nails during three hours. the needle put into drill machine, then make 1000 movements down and up through the piece of apple wood. Then just cut off the7mm-piece of wood and you will have
1000 tree nails with the lenght 7 mm...

Woodeater,

It sounds very interesting! Could you please post pictures (if you have any) or could please recommend a Russian site explaining this method?
I think I have understood the whole concept but I miss certain details.
