Hello. To get to the point what wooden ship kits would experienced folks recommend. I've built many plastic kits in the past but with little fingers in the house I stopped. Now that I can start again I found I would like to try a wooden model ship. They just look so much more to me. Am interested in US or British warships from the 1700's to 1815. Any suggestions and recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

krstewart,

Welcome to MSW. There are lots of good folk here with a lot of experience who are willing to share their information and help if you have any questions. When you begin, please consider a build log so that we can see your progress.

w/r/t a reccomendation, I believe that most of us would say that whatever you choose, make it something that you really want to build. Building a ship that only has marginal interest will eventually sap your energy.

Having said that, Model Shipways has some introductory kits that are good. Manufacturers often label their kits as entry, intermediate and advanced. Given your interest, Sultana may be of interest to you. and there are plenty of build logs of the Sultana on this site as well.

Again, glad to have you aboard.

Hello krstewart and welcome to MSW. Mike has already given you excellent advice. Real interest in your choice of build is important and simpler models are great confidence builders, Take a look at The Sultana and the Phantom from Model Shipways and also some of the simp;er models from Midwest. Browse the build logs ( kits) on MSW and see if anything catches your fancy.
Most of all have fun.

Thanks for the input. It looks like the Sultana it is! I almost bought a Constructo "Union" Brig at a local hobby shop but after looking at comments here I'm glad I didn't. I'll have plenty of question's in the future and look forward to the responses posted on this forum.

Welcome (from this side of the pond)to MSW my friend, nothing to add to what's already been said. Good first choice with the Sultana, You might find Chuck's practicum useful, have a look through it and you can get some idea what your up against. (solid hull)

krstewart,
Another warm welcome from North of the Border. You have received excellent advice from all the previous posters. The only extra thing I would add is this is a hobby....have fun, enjoy your build and remember measure once, twice, and then again before cutting.
Enjoy your time here.

Hello KR, You have made a good choice . If you havent already downloaded Chucks practicum you should do so . If you decide to take advantage of his advice and make the improvements he suggests you will need to buy some extra supplies such as ssome1//16 by 1/8 basswood stripsfor the deck and upper hull planking so take the time to read before you order or visit your local hobby shop. You may also want to pick up some other supplies and tools (a good supply of #11 blades) have fun,
Kip

krstewart:

Welcome to MSW. As others have said, there are lots of people here that love to help others enjoy this interesting hobby, so don't be afraid to ask any question. No question is stupid if you don't know the answer.

One caution.......there are lots of tools made especially for building ships. Some worth the money, others that are a waste. As you get into the construction, having the right tools will definately help to keep your interest up. Be sure to look at internet sites or catalogs from suppliers like MicroMark and Model Expo. There are also threads here that will help you to know what you "have to have" and "what you may want".

Hopefully, like many of us, building ships is a great excuse for buying more tools!

Tim
