Hi all,

It always amuses me when people who see my models always - almost without exception - say I must have a LOT OF PATIENCE to create something like that.

They should see me waiting in a queue at the Supermarket, dealing with some incompetent Public "Servant", or worst of all driving in traffic - my headlight flashers and horn are almost worn out Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

This hobby is my "Chill-Out" ...... I can very easily spend two hours shaping a plank to just the right size without worrying about how long it's taken me at all Very Happy - ditto tying Ratlines Very Happy

I guess what I have is a lot of PERSISTENCE Laughing Laughing

Although it HAS TAUGHT me a lot of PATIENCE as well.

Real good therapy Laughing Laughing

Cheers, Danny Very Happy

Very interesting commentary. I am in the same boat (no pun intended). My wife still questions how I, of little (no) patience, and marginal ADD, can spend hours in fine detail work on my ships.

Hah- totally agree. If I had a nickel for every time someone said to me "Boy, I just don't have the patience for that" then well... I'd have a lot of nickels. The funny part is that like you guys, I have very little patience myself- so somewhere in there is a nice little disconnect. I guess you're right though in that it's a getaway from everything- I know as soon as I step in the garage and turn on the radio everything seems to just sloooow down and I'll spend 2 hours shaping a piece of wood the shape of my thumb. -Chad

I decided to look up patience as a definition...

Quote:
1. the quality of being patient, as the bearing of provocation, annoyance, misfortune, or pain, without complaint, loss of temper, irritation, or the like.
2. an ability or willingness to suppress restlessness or annoyance when confronted with delay: to have patience with a slow learner.
3. quiet, steady perseverance; even-tempered care; diligence: to work with patience.

1 - not me at all, I'll get irritated at the drop of a hat, sometimes with others or myself at doing something stupid.
2 - ditto
3 - now there's the one that you have to have to do this. The willingness to persevere.

Personally the ship is my release - doing something that doesn't have to be done on a time limit, can work as fast or slow as I like, and it has nothing to do with my work!

Master: "You must learn Patience Grasshopper!"

Student:"Yeah, yeah.. OK.. How long will that take?"

Actually I consider myself very patient, except for when waiting for things to show up in the mail, waiting for a delayed flight, or if I'm stuck in gridlock on the freeway. For some odd reason, those are the only three things that really set me off. Confused

Yep, I'll bet we have all heard the "wow, I just don't have the patience for that" line a thousand times. Very Happy It's funny to hear that a lot of you guys are as impatient as myself. I think the clarification that the hobby requires persistence rather than patience is spot on!

Shortgrass-

I've the opposite problem.. "If you mess up this house like you do your shop..........BAM............."

I can find most stuff but it could be a few layers under the surface.
