In the marketplace, that quality of model, fully rigged, would indeed be worth €30K to the right buyer.

Excellent quality and something to strive for , but 30,000 euros? My car is only worth one sixth of that!

Certainly spectacular work! But no more, so I think, than a good number of others executed right here by our resident masters.

Anyway, as mentioned, poor pay for all those hours of work.

Hi, Rich. That's a wise quotation you add in your posts. Is it your own or are you quoting someone?

It's a quote Aitch, from an anonymous author.

It would be difficult to surpass it in quality of workmanship and the asking price seems to be rather low at about £7 per hour. But I have always felt that collectors are rather blinkered when it comes to models. They will pay thousands for pretty poor models simply because they are very old, but dismiss anything newly built.

Even when it comes to my own humble efforts, what I consider my very best productions usually go for "peanuts" at the maritimes sales. By that, I mean about £2 an hour. But my biggest successes have been models that I built for "fun" in a very short space time. They have consistently sold well with selling prices occasionally topping £20 an hour!

I wish him well with the sale, but it is getting harder and harder all the time to sell models, especially big ones that no-one will insure for transit!

I would not like to put anything as good as that on Ebay, fees would be enormous and also open to scams. Much better to go for maximum publicity in newspapers, local and national, that may attract a direct buyer.

Interesting discussion has originated....

here is a thread- albeit in a different vein- that also discusses values, real or perceived.

http://www.shipmodels.info/mws_forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=46172

and whilst the model that is being sold here for 30'000 euro is of
commendably high quality....

may I introduce you to these models...

scratch built in the UK by Roger Antrobus

Values anyone...?

The debate issue I have--and one that 'Shipbuilder' has stated and experienced- is that there seems to be no agreed consistency in model ship values.

Is the perceived quality- to the beholder- irrespective of the materials used- the sole arbitrator of value?

I feel it is as unpredictable as the market in paintings--where a competent, talented , trained skilled and inspired artist can be totally undervalued--==>yet abstract daubs of little ( to me) discernible skill, pattern or 'quality can reach stratospheric values....?

I spend many hundreds of hours on building very small model ships, which are acknowledged as being ' good' .

http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery/users/jim-baumann/jb-index.html

Their origins are indeed humble- mostly resin or plastic kit based.-
does that mean that the model, despite being of good visual quality, is worthless..?

Interested to hear the views!
