  1. SOLEIL ROYAL - HELLER 1/100 (side project) At the moment I am refurbishing part of the house including my humble workroom. So atm I haven't technically been doing any major construction work regards to my kit. This is a big project but A SIDE ONE for me as when my workroom and other refurbish are bk to normal I will be starting a main project in wood. I actually started this a few weeks ago but didn't want to start a build log for obvious reasons, plus the fact even now I still don't have a true picture of where I will go with this, other than the fact I will be to a certain extent heavily improvising on her, which I have started. I wanted to have wooden decks throughout so I meaured the sizes of the planking on the decks, calculated how much I needed and bought in 80 x1metre lengths 3mm x 0.5mm lime wood. The planking has gone really well and I have now finished it all, I also stained this with a Dark oak stainer. The Hulls I was unsure about but went with the kit instructions using Humbrol brown yellow and a lot of drybrushing, this came out darker than expected but realising this was because the mouldings of my kit Hulls are solid black(I used the same brown yellow on my complete Royal Louis but since that mould was in white hence the colour originally close to what it should be). That said I was quite pleased with the darker finish and it gave it more of a weathered look. I thought the bottom of the Hull needed to be slightly darker though so I used a Humbrol Dark brown wash over the brown yellow and it really came up to what I wanted. I have also drilled holes in the hull sides for the addition of pulleys for the Gunport Hatches. Atm I am now just building and painting the guns. I've finished the 24lb(x24) and have just started the 18lbers. I was originally thinking to replace them all after sales but found it well nigh impossible to get the correct type of gun and in 4 different correct sizes, so I've had to stay with the kit supplied ones. I have also bought in relevant wooden Deadeyes(triangular), cloth flags and rigging thread. Looking a bit further forward I want to replace all the masts and yards with wood other than that I don't know exactly where I will go with her, other than keep painting and weathering parts, I may well add other things like metal anchors and Rudder chain etc... Apologies for the long intro and in hindsight I probably should have posted earlier, but this will be a long drawn out build a bit like this post lol... On to the photos.....
  2. I hope I am in the right interest group to formulate my following request: examples of interiors of the commander's and officers' cabin of a 17th century English Galleon. I am building (modifying a kit) in 1:73 scale the model of the Medici galleon Livorno from the year 1606. The type of construction I am doing is with solid frames and single planking. Furthermore, the model I build has a side opening on the hull to allow you to see the interior. I want to create the furnishings of the commander's cabin and that of his officers and the meeting room. Could you help me by showing me examples of such furnishings, always keeping in mind the year of the galleon ? What I managed to find in Google: 1-Sir Francis Drake with his galleon Golden Hinde managed to sail around the world from 1577 to 1580. Photos Golden Hinde replica 2-At allanyed's suggestion ( ) I found it: Vasa Museum's Director of Research, Fred Hocker Thank you in advance for all your help.
  3. Evening! So I decided another small built is in order. I wanted to be thematic to the history of my hometown. The plan was of a diorama of a venetian galley exiting the port of Chania, circa 1640. 1/700 was very small, so I went for around 1/350. I used the plans of "La Dracene 1675" although I mixed and matched other earlier plans I had, after all, the waterline hull at 1/350 left little room for specific details. In any case, the galley was of the heavy 2 masted version or "Capitana" Unfortunately I ommited photographing many steps of the built. Also, although the ship it self is basically finished, I revised my initial plan to have it exiting the port, and quickly built a simpler sea-base. So technically it is not finished yet, as the original plan is still feasible.
  4. Willem van de Velde & Son Jeroen van der Vliet & Remmelt Daalder Publisher ‎Thoth; 1st edition (September 20, 2021) Language ‎English ISBN-10 ‎9068688421 ISBN-13 ‎978-9068688429 Item Weight ‎2.47 pounds Dimensions ‎9.33 x 0.83 x 11.3 inches Suggested retail price. $44.00 Black and white and color photographs. Review. One of the most informative and comprehensive book on these 2 Dutch marine artists I have ever seen. The chapters are well laid out, which gives the reader a good idea of what the van de Velde's did and their life history. Both van de Velde's have produced more than 2500 prints and 800 paintings. Every painting and drawing has a brief description of what it depicts and title, size and location of the piece. Both paintings and drawings are very detailed and have been used to create the many plans from Dutch ships that are sometimes included with books. If you like detailed marine paintings and prints, a piece of important Dutch art history, then this book is for you. Actually it is a book for everyone. The only thing I don't like is that there are not enough pages with paintings and prints. It should have been double the size and both wider and longer. I would have happily paid more for it. 5. Hi, long ago in the Gallery of Models there were several images of the HMS Lizard 1697 which is now housed in the Pitt Rivers Museum. There are currently no such images, or al least I couldn't find them. Does anyone know how to get them back? I think, now, to make a model of this boat and those images would be of great help. Thank you.
