Starting my first ever ship build on the much maligned Revell 1/535 kit. Ever since visiting the Missouri 10 years ago, I wanted to have a physical memory of the visit. The lack of detail on the kit is well commented on, so I'm looking at using my visit memories and photos to bring this early plastic model up a little bit in terms of finish. Why the Revell kit? when it gets hammered on the forums? Well, the main reason if honest, is that it will fit with a current F1 LED lit display cabinet and I will be attempting to set it in an ocean diorama. So the 1/535 suits this purpose and I don't care that the underwater part of the hull is shaped like a bath tub. The Tamiya and Trumpeter kits of much higher detail but bigger scale would be too big to fit in the case... and finally, I feel like a challenge! which I may regret over time! To achieve this I'm trying the following: Getting PE at 1/500 from Toms model works Redoing all the "crucifix" 50 cals to PE Adding detail in the hull to reflect raised panel lines and rivets Real chain on anchors, not the gator teeth casting that's there at the mo, with rebored anchor Adding PE to superstructure and creating detail regarding portholes / deck items New radar and catapult PE items Added railing Reboring Smoke Stacks to have grill structures Reboring mooring chain cavity at the bow end Before starting properly, I'm wondering if anyone with ship building experience has any thoughts on whether this is a fool's errand or achievable? I've done a good bit of car and plane modelling but never ships. Also, the real parts that has me stumped are the double bofors guns. The moulds are off the chart bad , looking like legs sticking out of a box. Considering scratch building and then doing a cast resin to replicate.. don't want to blow the budget on 3d printing and there's nothing commercially available in that scale. So any pointers there would be appreciated. Anyway wish me luck and nice to join the community here.

Hello to everyone. Having visited the Missouri in Pearl Harbor with my family, I promptly started work on a 1/700 Trumpeter version. After conversation with a co-worker about my new project, he came in the next day with a battleworn boxing of Revell’s 1/535 Missouri from his garage (pristine and complete inside) and gifted it to me, saying he had never found the time to start her. Needless to say, the 20” long Revell quickly took priority as a fun and relatively simple build. Not only is the Missouri a historically profound ship, the Revell kit is equally profound in the history of model building - developed during the advent of plastic models. Dating back to the 50’s, it was conjectured that the hull below the waterline was at the time classified, hence the generic flat bottom found on the Revell kit. Purists may not like the lack of props or multiple rudders, but for kids running their Navy on the living room carpet this was a huge plus. Even with the flash present due to older molds, this kit is pure fun and a trip back in time. This was a build I did from 2019, before I joined Model Ship World. Hopefully there is some value in documenting her. The deck, hull and main guns go together easily. (Sitting next to the Trumpeter 1/700 project, which has been in drydock ever since.) Regards, Steve

I adopted an orphaned kit of a battleship by Trumpeter 1/200 scale of the USS Missouri aka:Big Mo a while back and has been awaiting it's turn on the building bench. It had never been started, however one of the previous owners (not sure how many? purchased a twin screw drive system from England for it. First impression, this kit is huge, and not for the faint of heart. upon completion of the Big Mo, I will either offer it for sale or possibly see if a local VFW would be interested in it to raffle off as a donation.

Hi! After a break I'm back to ship modeling, and this time I'll share the build here aswell! So my next project is the Uss Missouri as she appeared on her last tour in the Operation desert storm. My first form of business is with the hull! Firstly all the details were removed from the hull. After this thorough sanding to get rid of the all the parting lines and minor damages. Then the hull plates were masked and sprayed with Mr surfacer 500. This is by no means 100% correct so bare that in mind! Some other details were done with some masking tape on the top belts. After this Mr surfacer 1200 on top to check how it would look like. And closer look of the effect. Still waiting for the pontos set to arrive, then I'll continue to add the rest of the remaining drain pipes etc. details before continuing to the decks.- 178 replies

I chose this model because I built the USS Constitution, what I consider to be one of the first US battleships and this is the last US battleship. I strive for museum quality construction so I needed a model with plenty of add-on kits and large enough to show the fine detail of the ship. In addition to purchasing the kit itself I purchased the following: 1) Pontos 23002F1 - which includes the wooden deck. 2) Pontos 21002F1 - which includes the bofor detail. 3) Eduards Part 7 - which I got specifically for the air intake grills.

This will be a build log of the Sterling kit of the USS Missouri on 1/192 scale. I began with the AA gun arsenal as a way to avoid tedium late in the build Then I started framing up the kit.

I just received the Joy Yard Missouri kit. A cursory inspection shows that the advertisement hype is no exaggeration. Even the packaging is first class. The PE is in a separate box wrapped like a piece of jewelry. The details are really outstanding. The instruction manual is full color and appears very complete. The directions for bending a PE part specify which direction and how many degrees of bend to use. I only hope I can do this kit justice, it will be a challenge in deed. I have to finish my Indianapolis first. Here are some pictures to show some of the kit highlights. Enjoy, Harley

Hello everyone. This will by my first attempt at a build thread. Also, this is my first attempt at a ship model in over forty years. I thought I would start with a easy build, so I picked up Revell 1:535 USS Missouri. There is not a lot of detail on this model and I can't find that there is a photoetch set for this model. I started by working to get the hull and the deck to fit correctly. The froward area of the hull was bowed in, so I added extra tabs to the underside of the deck to make it fit. After gluing it up and lots of sanding, the hull/deck fit is starting to look better. The anchor chains were molded in, so I removed them to the chain plates and will replace them with metal chain. Please let me know if I have started this thread correctly and please feel free to add any comments to my build. Oh yeah. I don't know a lot of ship terminology, so if I use the incorrect terms please let me know. Bill

Hi everyone, this will be a record of my attempt to complete the huge challenge that is Trumpeters Mighty MO. the addition of both pontos kits only compounds this challenge. I have almost everything. I’m just waiting on the advanced add on kit to arrive. I recently completed Trumpeters Bismarck. The MO is 4 inches longer! I won’t bore anyone with photos of every sprue, but heres the color scheme and paint chart. Now I wish I could use tamiya paints as I like them and I am comfy airbrushing them, but their color selection for the MO is horrible. so I got these 2 sets from AK interactive. I hope they airbrush ok. any thoughts? I’m also considering Model Air and AK real colors of ww2. If I can find the colors needed. I got this Eduard mini kit of hull plates. The first of the Pontos kits dry transfers theres 50 of these to build! I went with the blue deck because it looks better to me. thats all for now. The 2nd Pontos kit should be here anyday now.

Hi All, I am new top this forum so I'm trying to get the hang of it. I am at the final stages of competing Missouri battle ship. A big job and very fiddly in places and I am at the stage of fitting hand rails to the main deck. I have the pontos photo etch kit and it supplies stanchions for hand rails. I have been using Pontos web site a lot and it has been very helpful but with the stanchions I cant make out if the stanchion is folded and hand rail fits inside the folded stanchion or if stanchion is just folded and glued and hand rail glued on the side of stanchion. Has anyone had experience with this. Thanks Chris. -
Hello, I am new here and I haven't built a model for more than 30 years now. Originally from Germany we recently moved to Switzerland after spending quite some time in New Zealand, Singapore and the Netherlands. Instead of starting small I thought I will go nuts with the full package and add-ons to get a good foundation in place. I actually hoped for the Joy Yards 1/350 Missouri due to the nicely detailed hull and AA stuff but this one seems to be dead in the water. I am aware that this build will probably take some time and patience but nevertheless I thought it would be nice to get a really accurate model in place. I love details and accuracy as long it is archivable with my limited skills and I am happy to invest in additional parts if they will provide some benefit at the end of the day. I am aware that some of the parts are redundant but shouldn't be a major issue at this stage. When I did my research I noticed that some of the items I am planning to use seems seems to be not really known (reviewed) so far. I will try to present them here for future reference. Since my account got lost in the redesign of the site i am going to start this build log. I am building the Tamiya USS Missouri ( as can be guessed by the title). I started this a while back but took a short break to build my friend a 1/35th scale M198 Howitzer (pics below). He was an artilliery man in the Marine Corps. I am enlisting myself so i would like to see if I can finish the Mighty Mo before i ship out. (fingers crossed). I will add pictures soon of what i have completed but i have painted the hull and some of the super sturcture. I have also sanded down the modeled chain and bought a real chain to replace it. I have some PE kits that i hope to expand my skills with and replace some of the stock parts. I also have purchased a wooden deck to be placed over the plastic one. I stumbled upon this site http://www.worldaffairsboard.com/modelers-corner/60395-building-tamiya-missouri-super-detailing.html where someone has built the same model. He adds some REAL detail to it and i have been taking a lot of tips from this sight. Just hope it turns out half as good. I think that is it for now. More to come soon.

Hello, I thought I would post my progress of this great ship from WW2. I started this over a year ago, before I built mt granddaughters doll house and when I kind of got burned out on plastic. My love of wood kind of took over right about then. Also, this ship came to a standstill when the wood deck I applied started to delaminate from the plastic deck. Too many attempts to lay it down because of mis-alignment errors and, probably, humidity issues in my workshop. I will have to tear it off and redo it when I get around to starting this ship again. I added the Pontos photo etch set with turned barrels and all kinds of other goodies. Enjoy. Here is the Pontos set and a couple of pics of the hull for scale.

Hi guys, You read it right, it is 1:2400. The finished model is roughly 5 inches long. Crazy? Yep that's me. Lets see how it goes! Here I'll just show you the kit. I haven't really gotten started yet. Any votes for my insanity yet? I can't wait to get into it.- 52 replies
