Skaphee from Symi Island

Skaphee was a sponge fishing vessel from Island of Symi at South East Aegean Sea
She was about 15 meters long and she was a fast sail ship. She had only one main mast and a small mizzen, she was “over-rigged”, with a “Sacoleva” or a “Half-lateen” sail along with 2 top sails and 2-3 jibs.
The mizzen sail was mostly used for smooth movements at the process of sponge fishing.
Those vessels were carrying a crew of 7-8 men and among them the “naked divers” (with no diving equipment) who dive with only a sponge in their mouth (to prevent water entering) and a flat oval shaped stone (called as “skandalopetra” = “Bellstone” ) in their arms (shown on the model) in order to reach the bottom of the deep fast.
The captain had the duty to follow the divers, when they were fishing in the deep, handling the tiller of the big rudder and the small mizzen sail.
The particular shape of the hull was perfect for those movements at the fishing process but it had also the disadvantage of instability in rough weather, making the need for great amount of ballast, necessary.
