Builder's Plan

This drawing, and a few photographs, were used to construct the model. The plan is a manually-made enlargement on graph paper of a much smaller drawing, probably from a 1942 Jane's Fighting Ships, to a scale of 1" to 30 ft. The 600 ft Houston thus became 20 inches.

The poem in the upper left corner is from the Jan 1, 1942 log of the Houston. Custom at the time was to enter the first log entry of the year in verse. The entry depicts a dire situation in a lighthearted manner, a reflection of the high morale of the crew as the ship entered her last year of life.

From the album:

USS Houston - circa 1964
