I am building the Mantua Astolabe and plan to have her under sail so I would like to have the cannons secured/housed. I have received information showing that the cannons would have been turned parallel to the bulkwarts and held with the breeching but I thought there would be more to the lashing then just the breeching and am looking for more details. Also I have seen drawings of the Astrolabe that seem to show her with a double lid port. If that is an acceptable way to display her I rather would do that. If I did a double lid port I assume the guns would be secured in the run out positon but how would the lashing be done. Would the gun tackles be used to help secure the gun or be removed.

I had printed out some cannon rigging pages from the internet. How I found them back then, I don't recall.

One is at:  http://www.fototime.com/25E4D7A80B8938C/standard.jpg

Another was posted at the old MSW. A page from "Ship Modelling from Stem to Stern" Milton Roth.

Fig 36-15 on page  223 or 233 (hard to read)

Hope this helps.

Brian

(edit) I realize these aren't parallel to the bulwarks, but it might give you some insight.

Thanks for the reply Brian. The pic you sent is helpful and if I do a double lid port I'll use that without the muzzle lashing. I seen the drawing in Roth's book which is the same as is Monfold's and both are for the gun deck. I have not been able to find anything for main deck or for a quartedeck. I still want to find more detail on lashing a gun parallel to the bulwark. If you run across anything please let me know.

I am still checking some of my books - I recall seeing in at least one a good drawing of stowing cannon parallel to the bulwark.  Here is a deck diagram from the HMS Beagle that may help a little.

Another picture that may help to find out how things were done.

It's a picture of the 3rd officer's messroom.

Things I've noticed: whitewashed bulwark, red gunport lid and something I had never seen:

a small square vent, probably to ventilate when the gunport is closed.

hope it helps

Thanks all for the replies. A lot of good info and the pictures and drawings give great detail as well as options. The Victory post had a lot of good info besides securing of the guns. Does anyone have an opinion about double lid port (guns run out) vs single lid (guns parallel) for the Astrolabe or is that just personal preference.
