Tsernikoperama from Greece by Thanasis - Finished

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

Well, I still build ships models...

I have been trough sad situations because of my country’s problems and I hadn’t sat at my workbench for almost two years, until I realized I had to move on…

I started again with a simple model, working slowly since yet, I had to remember many things of ship modelling and there were times where I felt like if I was a newbie…

Eventually I managed to finish the first model of my "new era”...

Because I wasn't sure about me or the result, I didn't start a build log, and I have kept only a few photos…

So it will be a short log and  it won’t take long for you to see the model ready. post-617-0-71394300-1371551110.gif

The real ship was a small version of a Greek "Perama" with some effects from another type of Gr. Vessel the “Tserniki”, related only to its dimensions.

As a small “Perama” it was the most singular type of a vessel in the traditional Greek ship-building of the 20th century, characterized by a small counter, placed crosswise at the upper part of the cutwater. It is believed that they had been lead to this particular construction, because of the upper spreaded sides of the vessel, which in this case couldn't reach the stems in bow and stern....This counter was offering a connection point for the gunwales but also a board for decoration...

It could be a merchant or a passenger boat at that time and rigged more often as a cutter or with half-lateen sail.

As far as I know, there are only two survived vessels to our days.

The model has been built from scratch, except the deadeyes-blocks and anchors, in 1:32 scale.

Thanks

I followed the plans of the hull of a real boat , and the method of planking on bulkheads.
Plywood was used for the keel and frames and beechwood for all the external wooden parts.
I also followed the traditional way of planking.

The model was built at the level of beams.
On margin planks, small pieces of wood were placed, giving the view of components of frames.
By building the gunwale and the counter at the prow, the hull took its proper shape.
Some wooden supporting constructions, were also made in prow and stern.

Hi Thanasis,

I really like that black and white photo at the first of your log.  What an interesting vessel.  You've done a beautiful job on your planking and the stealers in it.

I liked your phrase "new era" for your stage of modeling.  I also am entering my own new era, my next build will be my first since retiring.

best wishes

John

Beautiful design. These local work boats are always interesting. The planking is really very nicely done. It has great lines. I look forward to more progress.

Welcome back, Thanasis! Good to see you are active again and doing such lovely work. I'm well aware of the troubles you are going through as a country and am sorry that it's affected you personally.

The counter was made by a proper shaped piece of wood on which, a second thin sheet of wood at the same shape, was glued.

By making the decoration cuts on the sheet of wood, I avoided the wood carving on which I don't have a good name...

"Cheating" again...the carving on the rudder made by a ballpoint, that was passed some times, around a metallic form.

Very ingenious work with the counter and the rudder.

The details are wonderful. I really like your windlass and deck house. There is a lot to be said for large scale models of small boats. You can render just about everything in the boat and they make excellent models.

Thanasis,

You are making a stunning model. Beautiful.

By the way - there is no such thing as cheating in model making - just alternate ways of doing things. ;)  :)

Wonderful "cheating".  I'll have to use that on one of my boats.

The finished model is outstanding. It is a beautiful piece of work.

However, how about a few more photos of how you got there? I am sure everyone would relish a few more progress photos. :)

Many thanks Russ, I really appreciate your comment.

I'm sorry but I'm afraid I might disappoint you. As I have told you, I haven't kept many (any other) photos.

After the woodwork, what followed is the painting and the rigging and because it's a simple model, I never thought that these short stages would be interesting...

Thanks

Thank you all for your kind words.

I'm thinking of starting a new build by the end of the summer and I'll keep in mind to take more photos of the construction...

Thanks.
