Gallery of Contemporary Models from Museums and Private Collections

How to name your album for a contemporary model

The only rules are as follows...

1. must be a contemporary model with known provenance and lineage. Just because it is old doesnt make it contemporary. Either from a museum or private collection.

2. name your album appropriately - ship name - country - where it is located

HMS Minerva - English - Rogers Collection Annapolis

3. If an album already exists for the subject model in question, do NOT create another one. Send me a private message and we can make arrangements to add your photos to that existing album. This will make it easier for our members to find the research and content they seek.

4. Any questions please let me know...NO COPYRIGHT PROTECTED IMAGES.

5. Do not place images from the NMM site directly into an album. The NMM site already exists for that and its easy enough to get them directly. Only place new images of those models or any other contemporary models in this gallery. You know...the ones you took when visiting the museums yourself.

This gallery contains pictures of Contemporary models from around the world. We have created it as a research tool for our members. If you have a group of photos for an individual contemporary model please add it here. This category is for contemporary models only....

    Hello,
this are the pictures a friend and I made at the NMM. Because I'm at that time was more interested in the aft part of the ships, I have only these pictures. For pictures of the whole ship see: http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/66297.html

Details of the carving and cabin interior (taken through the glass) for a beautifully carved Royal Barge in the NMM. Built in 1732 for Frederick, Prince of Wales.

I will add more pictures in the future.

    For all carvers:

Photographs of a genuine contemporary lion figurehead from the early 1700s in the NMM. This is not a model or mock-up.

The paint, or course, is not contemporary!

1:60 scale model in the Science Museum Archive. The modeller has used wide planks for the decks, and not even scribed the seams in, just left them plain.

Model from the Science Museum Archive, 1:70 scale, of a 90 gun ship. Once belonged to a former First Lord of the Admiralty. Believed to have been made between 1706 & 1730. See label for more information.

Model in the Science Museum Archive. With original rigging. Photos include underside of tops where accessible. For more information, see included photo of Museum's ID tag.

She was originally fitted with many more cannons, these have been removed and are stored in the white covered boxes adjacent to the model. I don't know why this was done, probably the glue holding them in failed. Only one is left now, near the break of the forecastle.

Model from Science Museum Archive of unknown George I First rate. Model shows many interesting details, including cabin floors, one of which appears to be the points of the compass.

The model separates at gun-deck level, and I have now added photos taken later with the top half removed. The pump dale is shown, as is the margin plank with some joggling. The taper of the deck planks at bow and stern is also well shown. WARNING: note added 29th Sept 2015. Following comments from Druxey as part of discussion on deck planking, all viewers of the lower deck planking shown here should be advised that this may well be a later addition to the model, and should not be relied upon for historical accuracy.

Some small parts are missing or damaged, most notably the starboard quarter piece.

A few photos of a model that I saw in the Science Museum Archive. This is a 50 gun ship of around 1715. That's what they say, anyway. I am creating this album because although the model is a virtually total wreck, the absence of the decks means that the internal panelling from the sides of the cabin is clearly visible.

This should be a useful resource for all those considering the building of panelling in their own projects.
