  1. So it's been awhile. Let me start by saying thanks guys your encouragement help keep me going. I Have planked the inboard gun bulwarks and some of the hatch framing. I've been sanding and filing my ports which look out of wack to me, but am gonna roll with em. I see filler in my future, I'm swear I'm gonna post something on the lettering soon. What little time I've had lately I've been putting it into my boat and with turkey day coming I'll have some time to post it for u guys.
  2. Drum roll please...... I have finally attached my transom ! Otherwise have chiping away at the gun wales. Still lots and lots of sanding, cutting gun ports, more sanding, well you get the picture.
  3. Thanks Jpett, I did intentionally leave that board long. The only thing I like about basswood is that is super easy to cut/sand and any error is easy to fix. So I have been leaving boards long/big. This worked out great on my framing for the gunwales. So if your see a board thats a little oversized thats my method.
  4. just a quick update, planking and then some more. So here is my stren, my stipe terminates into the transome area at kinda right angle is this correct ? I viewed other builds and have seen such a variaty that my head is spinning. I know it's my model but I would like to make it as actuate as possible. Anyone know the answer ?
  5. Ken, that's perfect ! I was going to paint my inner bulkheads grey as the instructions state, but that red looks great, and from what I've seen other state it's historically accurate. Gotta wonder why Grey vs red what the though process was when painting a ship back then. Was it easier to get a certain color ? And hence that's what color you ship was or was their more thought put into it ? Anyways sorry to ramble keep up the great work ken
  6. Ken, thanks for that pic. Would love to see more of your transom and if it's not to much to ask, the top rail(s) where they meet at the quarter deck and forecastle. I am a little hesitant to attach my transom. The metal carving does not match up and I have tweaked it. Did you sand down the wood portion to fit the metal carving ? Or did you just leave the transom oversized ? Your build looks great. I'll be calling on you for help.
  7. Randy, Martin, ken and Jpett, thanks guys for the encouragement. JS, the letters have a paper backing that you put onto the sticky side of the tape. I'll try to take a pic to explain it better Tried to make a lip but I don't think it's going to happen
  8. So for what seemed like a years worth of painting I have my hull done. I have a couple spots to touch up but for the most part I am satisfied. Am working on the planks above the whale. Cutting the gun ports and having a accurate lip around each one is going to be a huge challenge. If any has an idea on how to get this done please let me know. I'm trying one now but think it's going to fail. I let everyone know how my idea works if it works
  9. JP, I though I saw you asking victory questions in another thread. Your skill will do this kit justice, I just hope you don't forget about the snake. I'm ridding your coat tails on that one. Funny how I was eyeballing the same kit. I decided to hold out for the Essex though (when it's corrected of course).
  10. You can't go wrong with model shipways. Althoght not the scale or year you mentioned. With a little research and skill you can convert the transom and other items to match your desired year/build. MS has outstanding customer service and good plans. I hope hope Eric is paying attention and i get a discount out of this :-). Seriously great kit !
  11. Mark-What were bridle ports for? JP I hope I have a why is this square moment. My front are rear port look a bit off. Painting has slowed me a bit. 5th coat and can still see primer
  12. JS did a great job with a decal. I have very little modeling experience and my "attempt" at a rub on was, well an attempt. I used clear scotch tape. I put the sticky side down and drew out my template. I then flipped it over, lined up my marks and gently stuck the rub on letter in place ( messed a couple letters up as they get put on backwards so when you flip the tape over it will be in order). The tape once flipped over will of course stick to your hull allowing you to rub the letters on. I can make a mock up and take some pic's if you want ?
  13. As always your dillegence and thoughtfully approach to your build has/is helping us all. Keep up the good work sir !
  14. I with jan, the mahogany in my kit had a red to purple hue, where as the apple wood was a closed grain chochlate brown wood
  15. Great build. Would love to hear more/see more of the cabin bulkhead and the fraiming at the bow. Did you omitt the oar ports ?
  16. JSG, wow that looks great, it reminds me of the constitutions name plate. Seriously thinks about re-doing mine. I think yours is better and probably historically accurate
  17. Robert- I'd argue with you but..... your right JPETT- my template was scotch tape with pencil marks to help allign the letters (didnt work to well as you can see) and then applied to the transom. Could have put more though into the pencil marks to get a consistant arch. P.S. my dog is tough, years of abuse has made him into a rock. JS- thanks I refer to your log constantly. well its back to the build and my abused dog.
