  1. For 2nd planking I am trying iron on glue sheets used in the veneer industry It seems quick and clean How long it will last I dont know I used iron on veneer for my last model and it is still ok after 2 years
  2. Hi Chuck thanks for getting in touch Unfortunately the model is at the moment on the top of the wardrobe gathering dust like a lot of others I suspect ? I hope to one day re start maybe when the weather turns bad it has been much too nice a spring and summer here in the UK to be sat in the workshop
  3. Hi Derek excellent build you have here I have just got the plans for the Triton and hope to start a build soon. I have one question if you could help, how do you work out the thickness of the frames and the spaces between them I cant find any measurements in either the X section or the complete build Thanks Andy
  4. Hi just a thought about ordering blocks from non EU countries you will have to also pay VAT and import costs much to my cost ! Syren ship models blocks are well worth the extra expense maybe some enterprising chap could buy them in bulk from Chuck (if he can supply bulk orders) and sell them in the UK ? maybe it would make them a bit more affordable
  5. Hi I have some excellent tweezers by tweezerman available from several suppliers on Amazon or E bay used mainly by ladies to inflict pain on themselves plucking eyebrows etc
  6. Hi sorry for the delay in replying you can fit the blade at any length I use standard scalpel blades from Swan Morton I find them to me reasonably priced and very sharp
  7. Hi all I have just received a new knife handle and am so impressed with it that I thought you would like to know about it it is by Veritas they class it as a carving knife but I find that it is useful as my general knife handle for most operations It will take most blades x acto or scalpel blades . Because it has an oval handle it will not roll off the bench which is a good safety feature . It is not cheap but I feel that it is worth the money http://www.veritastools.com/Products/Page.aspx?p=63
  8. try looking at this post http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/9238-using-veneers-for-planking/ Andy
  9. Thanks for the advice Yes I have suffered from splitting And knife slips leaving my mark in more ways than I wanted ! Andy
  10. Thanks for the likes and comments Fortunately Spyglass Chuck has as usual thought of everything and I have a full size deck plan to work from Andy
  11. Hi thanks for all your advice the deck is now planked and I don't think it looks too bad as expected it isn't even port/starboard but by the time all the deck furniture and guns are fitted I don't think anyone will notice (apart from ME !) Andy
  12. Thanks for all the advise this is really a great site when you get a bit stuck I just wish I had the skill and experience to help others and join in a bit more Andy
  13. Thanks Antony and Clare for your advise the only thought I had was that the deck would look odd if where the planks were nibbed intp the margin plank they would be out of sync port/starboard but i think that would be less noticable when covered by the guns etc than the centre furniture not looking correct Sorry Antony I havn't done a build log I have some photo's so maybe I should Thanks Andy
  14. Hi Keith that was my thoughts the hull is complete so I don't realy want to re duo anything
  15. Hi thanks for the replies in the photo the red line is the centre line between the bulwarks the black line is the line from the centre of the bow to to the centre of the stern
  16. Hi l am looking for advice I am planking the deck of my Syran model and it is bent ! Do I follow the bend with the planks or do I start with a straight line from the center of the bow to the center of the stern I am thinking of going for the latter It is approximately one planks width out in the center Thanks Andy
  17. I find an iron to be excelent for hull planking not your good lady;s though if you ever want a shirt ironing again
  18. The cannons are part of the basic kit I think have you got all the cast minions and soldiers ? They are what makes the kit unique take a look at some builds on the site Andy
  19. just a thought I am sort of building the same kit that I bought from E bay a problem I had was that there was no fittings with it (they were sold seperatly on early Billings kits) Billings do not supply them as seperate items anymore and they are a MAJOR part of the finished model if you don't have them then I would strongly suggest that you either buy a new complete kit and pretend it is your grandads but as been said before the Wasa isn'y realy a good first model and I think you will get very disheartened and maybe put off the wonderful hobby we all (mostly) enjoy Andy
  20. Hi all I have just bought a Proxxon DH40 planner a.d wondered if anyone has tried removing the blades and covering the drum with sandpaper held in place with the blades clamps so making a sander thicknesser with controlled in feed a fault that I have read about with many others on the market Andy
  21. Hi all sorry I haven't posted for a while but things have been a bit busy at work and with family and as I have said before I tend to be a bit of a lurker often on the site but not very often posting . I guess we are all our own worst critics but I never feel that my work stands up to criticism compared to the excellent work shown on the site. But here goes with a few pictures of my work so far
  22. hi I have just caught up with your build very impressive so far Just a quick question how much did it cost to import the wood package and did you get stung for customs like I did with my kits from the USA Andy
