PhD Microbiology 1978

I built my first computer in 1976 from kits and scratch, and I have been employed designing and programming small computers, electronics instruments, oceanographic instruments, process controllers and general electronic gadgets since 1980. I started using CAD programs in 1987, for mechanical and electronics design and illustration.

 

I have been fascinated with ships since I was a kid, and my stint in the Navy left me with a great love for ships and the ocean. I started out with plastic models and was scratch building with balsa by my early teens (not very good models I am afraid, but good experience). I have constructed several plank on frame sailing ships from kits. My biggest project has been researching the USS Oklahoma City CLG-5 (that I served on from 1969-1972) and planning an accurate 1:96 model. For this I created a 1:1 CAD model from the original blueprints and over a thousand photos. I am now working on 2D plans to be used for the physical model.

The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.

The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build.
