  1. I'm going to start on the Batavia by Kolderstok. I was attracted to this model because of the colors (see Pic #1), and also because I wanted to try out a Kolderstok model. What's in the box: Laser cut boards Lots of wood Parts Instruction manual and plan sheets Note the manual -- I really like manuals with accompanying pictures. There's also an interesting parts bag with white resin-like parts. I haven't seen this before. Either it's injection molded, or possibly done on a 3D printer, which would be a first for me. I ordered this model directly from Kolderstok (http://www.kolderstok-models.com/index.en.html), and I want to particularly commend the wonderful pre-sale service I received from Hans van Nieuwkoop. I had outstanding communication from him via email, and he offered me several different customization options, one of which (an all-walnut second-planking) I took, because I like the look of all-wood hulls vs. painted hulls. Really excellent service and professional shipping. So here we go on another one. I haven't seen any logs on Batavia, so I hope this one contributes. Regards, David
  2. Recently I have started the scratch building of the Dutch VOC Vessel Batavia, which shipwrecked on her maiden voyage on the 4th of june 1629 - near to the australian westcoast at morning reef near Beacon Island. If you do some research on the internet you will find a lot of information about the shipwrecking of the Batavia and all that happened afterwards... As there is no wooden model kit for the Batavia I bought me the plans which where made on the Dutch shipyard "Bataviawerf" in Lelystad, Netherlands - and started the model from scratch. In this topic you'll find the pictures I made during the building proces - started beginning of december 2013 up until now. I'm about halfway building the Batavia. I started with plywood and a jigsaw... Keel and frames same First decks planked Hull partly planked
  3. Hi All just uploaded a gallery of photos of the Batavia original timbers that are on display in the Shipwreck museum in Fremantle. I took these about 18mo ago while out there, and figured they would be a useful resource for anyone interested in VOC ships. Batavia dates from 1628. There are some interesting features and a couple of the cannon she was carrying as well. http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/gallery/album/648-batavia-shipwreck-wa-museum-shipwreck-galleries-fremantle/ Imgages are HD size - which kept them well inside the upload size limit. If anyone wants full size (18M pixel) of any pic PM and I'll forward it to you. Colin
