  1. Like many of you I have also chosen the cross section as my first scratch build. I’ll be building it simultaneously with by Confederacy so maybe some steps will proceed slower then expected. The first step for me was choosing the wood...I’ve decided for a combination of boxwood and walnut, maybe I’ll also use some pear but haven’t fully decided yet as I am a bit concerned about a conflicting color scheme. I am really looking forward to this build and your comments and suggestions!
  2. Hello all, I recently purchase a Byrnes table saw and am eager to start a project with it. This will be my first attempt at a scratch build. I have chosen to use maple for the keel and frames. Thanks, Tony
  3. Dear Administrator and forum members, Today I started my cross section project. I want to build my model in oak and in scale 1/24. Making the keelson and keel is not such a big deal, just sawing the pieces to the right dimensions. To make the rabbet in the keel, I made a scraper out of an old iron saw blade. First I sawed a groove on the location of the rabbet in the keel, afterwards I sharpened it with the scraper.
  4. Back before the "Great Crash" of MSW I had built the Triton cross section. I had a pretty robust build log to go along with it where I detailed just about every little step of my build. As it turns out, a friend of mine had actually saved about 95% of it and it has been sitting on my hard drive for quite some time. I haven't been on here much at all the last couple years but I saw my wood list made it's way on here and has hopefully helped a few people. It got me thinking that I would be good to get the build log out there to help others, also. I am going to try to start parsing it out in posts over time starting from the beginning going step by step, but I also have no problem giving out the .xps file to anyone currently building who doesn't want to wait (just be warned it is 180 pages long and includes a lot of fluff you would have to wade through!). -Chad
  5. I saw the topic for the H.M.S. Triton cross section build and thought to myself that I should be able to handle this build. So I downloaded the first part of the plans and went to work. First thing I did was glue to pieces of scrap together to get the correct diminsions for the keel and keelson. Then I cut them out (by hand, I really need to invest in a scroll saw) and did a rough sanding on the three pieces and cut the rabbet in the keel. I'll finish sanding them tomorrow since the Admiral is wanting me to spend some quality time with the family. Anywho, here are the pics:
  6. Hello, This is the start of my build log for the Triton Cross section. this is my first attempt at scratch building. hope to build up to a full size HMS Victory.
  7. Greetings to all, I am currently requesting access to the rest of the pdf files for the H.M.S. Triton cross section. I realize that the plans are for 1:48 scale but I am choosing to go at it on a 1:24 scale. There are two reasons why I am choosing this scale; 1. at a larger scale I can add extra details to the model, 2. I have large mitts for the smaller details required for a build. Attached you will find the photos showing what I have thus far.
  8. Starting over with a few pictures to show where I'm currently at. Still saddened by the loss of years of accumulated knowledge. Regards, Grant.
