I have not seen anything like this rig. I found it in NRG #28 pg. 84. As I have been trying to learn about rigging, I have read a LOT of books on the subject. I do not recall if it was ever mentioned. Looking at the painting, the Topgallants have been lowered. It makes sense to me as it would lower the center of balance. Can anyone point me in the direction of further reading on this? Would this be a common practice? Thanks for any further insight and education! Mike Toole Lancaster, PA

Hi, I'm quite new to ships and I was wondering if someone could explain how masts are done exactly on old full rigged ships. I was checking some general plans on masts on the internet but I still don't quite understand. In general, I found that the mast is round until some point and then it is somehow squared off on the top, but if I understand correctly it is first trimmed in octagon before being squared. Can someone explain why it's constructed like this, please? And is it the same for topmast and topgallant mast? Also, if anyone can point me to some good plans on masts, would be be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi everyone! Im new to ship modeling and i recently started my first ship, the AL Bon Retour. I have looked a lot of information up in this forum (you guys are amazing) and in others. Im hoping, once the ship is done, to upload the final producto for you guys to see. Im at the point where the hull has been planked and painted over, and im moving to rigging. This has proven to be very challenging, since AL kits dont usually come with a lot of pictures, and understanding the diagrams for a novice like me is taking me some time. I have a question. There are some "blocks" on the mast of this boat which lines loop around and apply tension to. I will attach a picture so you will know whatim talking about. My question is how do i do them. I know i need to "file" the mast to the appropiate width. Do i work around filing? Do i just prepare a piece of wood and glue it with PVA? I need some advice. And sorry for bad english

Two questions... Mast and rigging related.
Jorge Hedges posted a topic in Masting, rigging and sails
Hello! Quick question... do you assemble masts/sails/rigging off the hull, or install on the hull and then the rest of the work? Pros/Cons of each appreciated. Also, any good rigging tool kit available? Or what tools do your recommend for a very nice rigging tool kit? Thanks! Jorge -
Hello, I'm 3D modelling the Black Pearl and I'm struggling to find any good reference on how the masts are supposed to be rigged. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi - My husband and I are trying to figure out how to attach this sail to the mast. My father built this sailboat a long time ago and my stepmother gifted it to us after he passed. We had it on display until a gust of wind came through the house and knocked it over, breaking the boom. We took the sail off to get the boom repaired. Unfortunately, that was about 10 years ago. Now that we have repaired the boom, we can't figure out how to re-attach it. I'm attaching photos and really hoping someone here can help us. My stepmother is visiting next week so we would like to have it back together by then. Thanks for your help - Kathy

Hi All, I am starting the rigging for a 3 masted square rigged English ship from around 1800. In have looked in a few books and other internet ressources about the subject, but I cannot figure out how the blocks that are fitted under the masts' tops are called, how many of them are there and what are they used for. Can anyone help?
