I was planning to make a set of wooded calipers/height gauge following Ed Tosti's design. However, I was at a local tool store that had metal squares on sale for $6 and I got the idea to use two of these to make the calipers. The result is shown in the attached pictures. Very solid, perfectly square (after a little tweaking), it has a built-in ruler, and I got an second ruler out of it. While I did file a sharp point to the end of the caliper, the metal is pretty soft (aluminum or zinc). If I need to do serious scribing, I'll attach a small knife.

Hmm, I was cleaning my work table and placing items in their proper areas. I have four metallic rulers, both showing the metric and imperial units. By pure curiosity I placed the shortest one, 15.24cm - 6" next to my 30.48cm - 12" and my two 45.72cm -18" and found differences. None measured as the other. The difference is so slight, but could probably cause error when mixed. Now I marked the 15.24cm and 45.72cm that are almost identical. The other two to be donated to friends 3rd grader school kids. A high quality digital caliper needs to be purchased.

The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
