  1. So I took the plunge and purchased Gutermann Mara 120, 100, 70, and 30 in the colors in Hemp (854) and Pine tar (696) at a cost of around $3.00 each, totalling about $33.00. I love the colors. Because this is the first time I am making rope I wasn't going to purchase the biggest spools. I need to fine tune my ropewalk and then I'll given it a try. I have a spool of cotton thread which I bought several years ago and it makes nice rope. Marcus

  3. Hello all, I am new to the wooded model ship building hobby. I have a question for the experts. What type of thread/cord do you use when you make the ropes (as in using a rope walk)? What are the three threads, etc in pictures of rope walks I see?? Many thanks for all the great information and tips. Jabe
  4. Hi; Question: How do I decide what color rigging to go with? My Mamoli model the Royal Mary has all Tan line - do not like it much as the color is too light. My Bounty had black rigging and looked good. I see some models on this forum with shrouds that are black line for vertical and white line for horizontal. Did every century have different color line? Does it depend on what country the boat is from? Does it depend on the type of rigging? I always like to built my models historically correct, so who knows the answer, if there is one. Thanks, Marc btw. If my era boat is to have tan lines I will give it tan lines.
  5. I am at the stage of my build of starting to rig my San Francisco II. I started with the forward mast stay. It went better than I thought it would but in the end, after waxing and even flaming over a candle to fry off the frizz, they still have frizz... less but more than i wanted or expected. Lets just say from 10 feet away it looks great... upon close inspection it needs a shave I'm using AL supplied threads. I bought some needle point thread from Hobby Lobby and it has less frizz mostly since it's a cotton blend but some fuzz still exists. Is there something better? Is one company the go-to for thread/ropes? On websites pictures they all look good... So, what am I doing wrong or what am I not buying?
