HMS Warspite by Old Collingwood - FINISHED - Academy - 1/350 scale - PLASTIC

Recommended Posts

Evening all,    so todays operation was to fit two rafts then paint them,  also I  worked on one of the cutters, this just required abit of pe ontop, then two stands where constructed from two mirror image sections of pe,  these where mated together and glued - then they where attached to the bottom of the hull.

A few hours later I was able to paint the cutter a uniform mid grey color and some light sand color to pick out some wood seating inside, this was then attachd to the deck.

Its starting to look a little more busy now.

The wife is abit under the weather at the moment so Im up with her downstairs as she finds it easier on her breathing when she is hot,  so at the same time as looking after her - I decided  to do a bit more on the bench, so I continued with the mid deck gun tubs eather side of the old float plane track.

Here are a couple of pics -

Oh by the way  - the difference is size between the tubs is because I have run short of pontos ones so I have worked on the kit plastic ones, I sanded the centeres out a bit to try to thin down the tub armour thickness,  its helped a lot as the kit ones where well over scale, but they are clearly different from the pontos resin ones, but once they have the guns inside and painted up they wont look to bad.

Good day all,

Today marked another milestone  - completion of another section on the ole girl,  I finished off putting some more AA units in the tubs and giving them the appropriate paintwork,  however upon the ship receiving some light deck damage - two of the tubs had to be removed and two small wood deck patches where constructed.

So next stage will be construction of the hanger block - a mini build in itself.

Thank you kindly for the compliment,   nah  Im going to leave it with some artisitic license - gives it a bit of individuality that way,   same with ontop of the hanger near the funnel im going to put a patch there as it was a well documented area where she received some damage from an areial device that caused a lot of internal damage.

First steps with the hanger block,   in the process of dry fitting  I had to do some trimming away of the grey paper I had fitted to simulate steel deck sections,  while doing this and hand holding the the model - I managed to knock a few AA barrels off,  so I have removed them from the tubs, and when I can re charge my mojo I will have a go at the pe versions,  I will have to try to scratch them using the plastic pedestal parts as I do not have the pe pedestal parts.

Oh well  one step forward and two back.

Just the one pic.

I  have been having a think about building the pe 20mm Oerlikon's,  but apart from missing the pedestals  I dont think I have the skill or dexterity not to mention finger skill to build the pe parts I have,   I may empty the tubs till I find another medium   perhaps  these  -  https://www.shapeways.com/product/PAL37YYSW/1-350-usn-20mm-oerlikon-mk4-shielded-set-x5

That's an absolutely wicked looking German bomb. I've got to admit, the Oerlikons are not an easy build, but not impossible either. You could probably cut some plastic rod to simulate the pedestals and get it pretty close. The real ones are tapered, but you'll probably not notice the difference at this scale.

You are doing a great job, OC. Just keep doing things the way you want it and you'll be fine.

It was one of the first remote controlled glide bombs we are so familiar with today. This one was armor piercing to boot, making it extra nasty. It's biggest disadvantage was that the pilot had to stay in visible range of the target for the whole time it was falling.

Yep   three where dropped on/near warspite  - one missed and caused no damage, one exploded on her starboard side and opened up her torpedo bulge, but the main one was a direct hit, it entered on her hanger boat deck next to her funnel, it went straight through three floors and exploded in one of the engine rooms (destroying the entire engine room)  and exited through her bottom hull,   she took on 5000 tons of water but managed to lock the water tight doors and limped to crete near greece.

Bit more work today during the thunderstroms - I have built the lower section of the hanger along with a couple of ammo cupboards, and a pe door or two, then I gave the assembly a couple of coats of mid grey,  and on the top a few coats of dark grey.

I have also emptied the Oerlikon tubs and gave them a tidy up  ready for when I can save up for the beauties shown above.

Next stage - work on the hanger insides,  I will be keeping one side closed and one side patialy open and will keep a ships boat inside, as no aircraft where kept onboard after late 1943.

I thought I read that somewhere a long time ago as well, but looking up the "Fritz X" all I can find is that they were radio controlled and as such were subject to jamming that after their original successes against the Italian Roma and Italia, and later the Warspite the allies started jamming as a standard measure. The need for the bomber to linger on a steady course also made them easy targets for fighter interception.

Indeed my friend,  I think  the ole girl was very lucky   mind you many accounts from sailors who served in her, said she was a lucky ship,   look at what happened with her demise  - she didn't want to be scrapped so she rammed herself on some rocks in Cornwall England.

That's probably correct, Lou.

I think they might have had one type of bomb that was radio controlled, and another that was fly by wire. Can't recall which was which.

Apparently she didn't like going anywhere when not under her own power. She also broke all of her tow lines when going through the Straights of Messina on the way to Malta for repairs. She ended up going through on her own, sideways, before they could hook her up again.
