Bulwark Fairleads

Recommended Posts

I am looking for diagrams or pictures of bulwark fairleads (for the main and fore sheets) for a wooden barque circa 1860. Some indication of size or proportion with regards to the rigging size would be helpful. I am not sure whether they should be sheaved or just lined holes in the bulwark, so any advice regarding this would also be appreciated.

Thanks,

Grant.

The sheets for the forecourse would go to a block on the fore peak directly and not through the bulwark. The main course would also go through a block on deck rather than a fairlead through the bulwark. The forecourse would also taper inwards from the yard on this era vessel.

Hi grant, might be easier if you could show part of the plan. To give an idea of the arrangement. Seems very strange for the forcourse but could be right.

As for size diameter of rope, we have used 28mm line onboard both Leeuwin and endeavour replica.

Anton,

thanks for the interest. I couldn't fit enough of the plan to get everything, however, you can see the main & fore sheets going through bulwark fairleads. There is an issue with the main sheet fairlead, it is obstructed by the ladder to the poop deck. This has given me pause to speculate that the rigging plan is drawn as 'typical' for the period, not on the known rigging plan of the ship. Or it could just be a drafting oversight? I am using Underhill's "Masting & Rigging......"  book as a guide for this model. He does mention that the book is a general guide only, that there were variations in use at the time.

What is the size of a fairlead for a 28mm line?

Regards,

Grant.

Grant,

Modelbuilders and those who draw many of the plans usually seem to simplify things.  From everything I've seen, it usually a "block" with a sheave mounting in or atop the bulwark.  I'd think that if it were just a hole, that's inviting wear on the line.   Maybe a really small ship might just have a hole...

Hi Grant, two options for you.

First pic shows the sheet mounted to an eye bolt on the bulwark then the bitter end comes to a cleat on the capping rail. This is how the course sheet on Leeuwin works.

Next pic shows a sheave in the bulwark. The bitter end would pass through the sheave and lead forward to a cleat so being so close to the ladder shouldn't be a problem. It its still too close for comfort. Move the sheave forward. This is the arrangement on the Barque Europa.

If a sheave fitted I've shown the makeup of a sheave, definitely not just a hole. Also with the different rig choices from Leeuwin and Europa, both ships are the same size and the fire course on both ships are the same sail area. And both rigged to typical mid 19th century rigs.

Hi Grant

There is a model of the Harriet Mcgregor in the Tasmanian Maritime museum in Hobart. not sure if they would send you photos, but worth a try.

there are a lot of photos at the tas state library, that may be good for reference, they are accessible on line.

another place for information is

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/result?l-title=10&q=%22HARRIET+McGREGOR%22

I have been researching the mcgregors ships for a lot years now and still have a long way to go, I am planning to build the Harriet model myself.

i am very impressed with your model I would love to see when its finished.

Regards

Andrew
