Ben struggling with a cold which is much worse with my illness and weakened immune system but have been able to get some work in. The ships wheel the kit supplied is the worst thing I've ever seen. There is no way to make this thing work at all so I decided to try my hand at fabricating one myself. I copied the wheel drawing from the plans and glued the cut out on a flat wood base to go by. A little while back another MSW member (Dennis R. in New Zealand) gifted me with some wood samples. One of the types he sent was some flexible beech. I liked the way it looked and well it is to work with so I used it to make the wheel. Started out with 4 pieces to form a circle to build up from and a round center piece. even with the template is was hard to keep things in a perfect circle. Used this old glue cap which happened to be the exact size to keep it shaped just right. I just perused your build to see if you are using any different methods that are given or pictured in the Syren instruction manual. A friend gifted me a started Syren model and kit to add to my already growing shipyard and dry-dock, I am in the starting process of plating the hull and wanted to see if you were varying from the instructions. I have to ask how difficult was it to construct the nail jig? I am debating on whether I should use that method or just leave the plates flat. Did you apply a coat of contact cement to the hull before applying the plates? The copper tape already has glue on the back but this was only to hold it on the pieces of glass until the solder was applied so I think the extra coating of contact cement would insure the plating would never fall off. I traced the actual size patterns on page 34 of the instruction booklet. Laid that over the wood jig (you could also just glue it on it). this has the points marked for your pins. I used brass nails left over from an earlier build , I think they came from Model Expo but its been so long I cant remember. I CA glued them in the proper pattern then snip the heads off. File them off flat and there you go! My kit was also a gift from another MSW member. It had been sitting on a shelf for years when I got it so the copper tape wasn't sticking very well anymore. I ended up CA gluing under each plate which is frustrating because it is hard not to get any of it on the outside surface where you don't want it. It probably would have been better to do as you suggested and used contact cement.
