L.F. Herreshoff Buzzards Bay By Pete48 - Small 3/4" = 1' - 0" scale - Finished

Recommended Posts

Thank you Cap'n'Bob, that is why planking is my favorite part of the build, this is where the boat really takes shape. I should have another update this afternoon

Best Regards,

Pete

Pete

looking very nice. I am currently doing planks that have quite a lot of twist in them, & seeing your work I was wondering if you put any curve into them before laying them up on the model, or do you just force them into shape? They look like they have at least a 45 twist plus the curve, so it's a good comparison.

Thanks - I'm not really sure what others do, so it will help if I find out what others (that have more experience) do.

thanks

Thanks, Mark, When I take the planks out of the Alcohol, I start bending them right away along with any twist it may have, I then lay it on the Frames and adjust the fit accordingly, Then I glue it up, it takes some trial and error and sometimes the wood does not want to bend the way you want it to, ( it's best to then grab another stick of wood )

Pete

I actually got started last night, with the completion of the planking. I woke this morning and finished installing all the custom planks. I then started Fairing the Hull, at this point I wished that I had increased the Scale of the Boat to 1" = 1' - 0". I had originally planned to West System the Hull so that she could be Sailed like the first one. ( the second one was built static ). So I Faired the hull starting with 180 grit Sandpaper working my way up to 320 grit Sandpaper.  I then went to Kinkos Copies and Scaled the Drawing to 1" = 1' - 0" ( this will give me the opportunity to make her into a Radio Controlled version) along with some more details. Next on this one will be fo finalize Fairing the Hull. Staining the Transom and deciding if I am going to just build her Static. In the first photo you can see the scale difference between 3/4" and 1" to the foot. I am very pleased with how the Boat is turning out this far. here are the results

Thank You, Patrick, I am very pleased with how the Hull turned out, a little more Fairing and some filler in a few spots and she will be perfect This one will be built static. And the next one at  1" = 1' - 0" will be built RC ( wich will be the next build )

Pete

Today, I got an early start. And started by using a wood filler to fill in some of the low spots and the rabbet line at the stern post. I then sanded the Hull up to 600 grit Sandpaper. The Fairing of the Hull is now complete. Next will be to Stain the Transom ( Cherry Red ) and seal up the Hull with a coat or 2 of Epifanes Varnish, Then she can be removed from the Building Jig. Here are the results

I hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving, and After a day of recovery ( from the Turkey Day extravaganza ) I started the sealing up of the Hull Process, First I faired the Bow section to get it to match the drawing, Next I stained the Transom a Cherry Red, and Then applied West System epoxy ( I went with the G-flex over the 101 resin - 205 hardner due to pot life wich is 15 minutes with the 101 -205 ) Next will be to Fair the Hull and re apply epoxy if necessary. Here are the results

Well, It took 3 days, due to an Average high temp of 24 degrees Fahrenheit  ( -5 Celsius ) I could only manage to be outside at 10-minute intervals. ( No sanding inside the House ) I started at 150 grit Sandpaper and worked up to 600 Grit. I then applied the second coat of West System epoxy. ( very thin ) I am very pleased with how she is turning out. Next will be to remove her from the Building Jig. Here are the results

Pete what is the cure time for West Systems Epoxy?  My brother in law uses it all the time and the last cabinet he used it on took several weeks to cure.  Could it have been the temp. or the humidity?

Thank you Patrick

Thank you David B., The cure time is 7 hours, I am guessing your brother in law did not put in the correct amount of hardner . humidity and temp do play a factor, however it would only add or subtract an hour or 2

Pete

-5celcius and I thought it was cold here. No working outside is not for me in these temps. Pete you have done a great job on the hull almost a shame to paint it but the time you have taken to get the shape right will pay off in spades.

Thank you, Michael,  It did warm up to 0 Celcius today ( 30 degrees Fahrenheit ), With Snow tonight. So no work outside for the time being.  I will be leaving the Top Sides Natural, Just the Bottom Paint and Water Line will have Paint. I think it will look good. By building her upside down, helped get the Hull shape a lot more accurate than the previous builds. ( I could not be more pleased )

Gorgeous Pete!  Yes, at first thought it does seem a shame to cover this nice finish but then again it's only a means to the final end, a nice paint job.  She'll be just a jewel!
