Elijah:

Next time you are at a meeting take a couple of photos of my shop/tools to show your Mom - she will not think you have so much once she sees the photos.

Elijah, my wife tells me the same thing all the time but it's funny how no matter how much stuff she thinks I have I always see something I don't! Haha! Needless to say my wishlist is a mile long and never seems to get any shorter. MSW has not helped as almost everyday I read another post about a book I should read or a new tool or jig that looks great. I just write it down on my list and when I can save up some money I treat myself to something new. I also drop several big hints around Christmas and my birthday..... ;)

Keep your eyes open though when you are out at different stores. Sometimes the best tools can be found in unlikely places. For example, many of my small, very sharp scissors have come from hair cutting supply stores. Also, jewelry making supplies are real good places to buy stuff. They are considered common use tools in those places and so the costs can be lower but quality better compared to some hobby stores where they are specialty items. It's funny how that works but it does and it also opens up more selection so you can find just what you are looking for.

Elijah,

Your patience and attention to detail on this part of the process is amazing!  I rushed through this part on my build - I wish I had your focus!  All this work you're putting in now is really going to pay off as the ship progresses!

You have a long way to go before you have enough tools.  Show her a photo of my shop before I moved.

Since I am a bachelor it could have been neater. :)

What a pleasure it was reading through your build log Elijah and what a great thing it is to have such a young and eager ship builder on this forum. Thanks for sharing your careful build with us. I shall follow along from now on.

Best, Ian

Hi Elijah. I don't know if you have already seen this or not but you might find the download helpful with your build. I think you have to register on the site to download the files  :)  not sure as i haven't registered there

Looking very good Elijah.

BTW, if a woman suggests you have too many tools, wait for the right timing and suggest she also has too many shoes and/or bags.

Proceed on the above step with extreme caution.

Slowly but surely sanding and filling. This morning I modified one of my kit supplied blocks. It turned out better than it was before I worked with it, so that's a plus! When I get home, it's back to filling and sanding!

  • 2 weeks later...

I have come up with a shaping system. Work bow to stern. I have nearly finished the very end of the bow on the starboard side. I came up with this cool set up for aligning my template. I will need to fill some over sanded areas when I'm done!

Sanding is one of the worst parts of any wooden project but the end results of the hours of misery are worth the effort. Your hull is looking great! Do not short change yourself by stopping an annoying task early. Push through and you will love the results.

I have faith that this young man will do what he needs to do. Whatever it takes.

While doing my first build ( I haven't got to rigging yet), I am guessing that sanding/filing has taken at least 50% of my effort

Hi all! Tonight's progress is below. I have the first four station lines to their approximate shape, on the starboard side. I will admit, there are a couple bumps, and possibly dents, but I will sand it all smooth, or fill. Anyway, here are a couple pics, the ones that show the best angles :D.

More progress tonight! I got rid of the bumps, and sanded down areas needing it. I also marked areas needing filling, as you can probably see :). Your comments and criticisms really push me to do my best, so thank you. Also, thank you Kurt and Mary for extending my NRG membership with the junior membership! When this model is finished, in a long time, I will have you guys to thank! Anyway, here are the pictures, I almost forgot!

This one below puzzled me. I finally got the idea to use the side profile to get the depth of the base for the keel!

Hey Big Guy - just curious about the table you are working on. Looks like some sort of saw or machining table?

Finally I made it......

This was a long journey of reading and trying to understand what you and the others are saying.

You've got a lot of help of many builders.

Some you have seen in person !

Those meetings are a little to far for us.

So we are doing it by your story's.

You are doing a great job with your pilot boat.

I will follow you further on !
