HMS Sirius 1797 by paulsutcliffe - 1:48 - POF from NMM plans

Recommended Posts

Difficult to explain the glue swelling, Paul.  Titebond II is a waterproof glue.  I paint acrlic over it all the time.  Could it be the sanding sealer?  Curious problem.

I am wondering if the water has somehow affected the wood strips (ie.e swelling when wet, shrinking when dry) while the glue remains unaffected.

Assuming your wood strips swell first and take the glued edges with it.

Then the wood shrinks (drying of water) while the glued edges remain in position?

Not sure if i am making sense here, but just a thought.

Hi Ed, I'm not sure either, I'm using Liberon sealer which is a spirit sanding sealer containing ethanol, resin acids and rosin acids??

Hi landrotten I don't think there was enough water in the paint to make the planks swell and shrunk but could be wrong, personally I think its something to do with the sealer as Ed said, but again not sure

It is quite a nice look though however it came about and actually looks like I caulked the seams properly !!

Decided it was time to start the channels as I am working around the ship, cutting the rebate into the waist rail in situ as I hadn't done them when building the Hull as a bit perilious but going slowly I managed

After one coat of sanding sealer

20181014_152341.thumb.jpg.fca5def43aef22ad3343b8bfbff45314.jpg

I cut the pearwood both ways with the grain and as this one across, from a strength point of view I should be using the other piece but the grain on this looks awesome and as I'm not going to be doing rigging on the model should be strong enough, I'm going to cut the edge off and file in the rebates for the chains

Its amazing now the addition of a few pieces makes it all start to look like a ship and it starts to come together, all starboard channels are now made and have bolts nothing glued as yet as I have to work out how to make the supporters

And a little test with a boxwood deadeye, I noticed some scratches on the fore channel and removed it to refinish, this is what I'm using for polishing up the pear to a smooth shine from left to right finishing with 0000 wire wool

Experiment to try and recreate the caulking lines as per the Cheerful, four beech planks all have had three coats of sanding sealer smoothed inbetween

Right hand side(bottom) also had some oil rubbed in and then painted on top, I'm sure the colour doesn't matter as its still acrylic

Left hand side is straight paint well watered down as per landrottens suggestion

20181023_192702.thumb.jpg.af8ede8bd1be235c4c513e2d984646ac.jpg

As yet no reaction like my cheerful Hull, only difference is this is beech and the Hull is holly, could that have anything to do with it??? And still needs a few more coats of paint

You need to replicate what you did in every way to begin to determine what happened, Paul. Change one factor and you change the experiment.

Of course you are correct Druxey, I didn't think the wood would matter as seemed to be something to do with the glue, however I will do again tomorrow with some holly strips

It's the mix of all the items you used that may be the problem. If other wood species do not cause the effect you had, it would have to be the combination of the holly and other items in the stew!

Holly strips are glued up and ready to go, meanwhile I made the two steam gratings for the forecastle

I have also started turning the legs for the belfry, according to my plans they are only 2 ft.(12mm) High, 6"(3mm) wide at the base, I can't quite get the taper yet but I have got the shape down from the plan, I also scraped around the edge of the roof, could only manage one line though in the space.

Paul, what are you using for sanding sealer?  There are many varieties.  Titebond glue is resistant to most finishes, but as we know, our favorite "ungluer" - isopropyl alcohol - will soften it - and probably swell it in the process.  Perhaps the sealer had this effect.  Also, if the glue joints on the curved hull were not tightly fit and the gaps filled with glue, that would be different from your tightly matched straight joint lines on the test piece.  Another possibility: you mentioned dark glue.  Is this purchased as dark glue or coloring mixed into the normal Titebond.  If the latter, what is the colorant?  Which grade of Titebond?   Just some other things to consider.

Ed

Added note: Apologies, Paul, I see you have already answered some of these questions and I missed that.  I would say that the alcohol-based sealer is a prime suspect, especially if the joint gaps were filled with glue.

Thanks Ed, I have another piece of Holly strips on the go to experiment on, hopefully done exactly the same as the planking

Meanwhile as its -2 outside in the garage I managed to persuade the boss to allow me to bring the rope rocket inside to do some more practise on the rope making
