gmontague Posted June 2, 2016 Share #1 Posted June 2, 2016 I am working on a Mamoli kit, the C.S.S. Alabama. The few planking diagrams provided are not very detailed. Specifically, I can’t figure out how the stern should be planked. I have never run into a stern like this (all my ships have been sail only). I have read “Ship Modeling Simplified” (Mastini) and “Planking the Built-up Ship Model” (Model Shipways) plus looked at the tutorials here but I am still at a loss. I was going to say plank the stern like most vessels of the time but I think these two photos will help you. I hope they are not removed. He planks the stern with the strips in a vertical position to get the desired curve. mtaylor Posted June 2, 2016 Share #5 Posted June 2, 2016 I was thinking... had a similar issue with the Constellation. Run the hull planking up to the bottom of the windows. Run the side planking around the stern above the windows. And Scott has a good suggestion... look at Nils' Kaiser William. I'm not sure what other ships here have a round stern like that. gmontague Posted June 3, 2016 Author Share #6 Posted June 3, 2016 Thanks guys. At least you helped me visualize where I am going. Being a visual learner, pictures are just what I needed. I also checked out the Kaiser Wilhelm log (Nils is way out of my class!) and vertical planking is the answer. I used to live in the Hampton Roads VA. area and the Hampton Roads Ship Model Society was a valuable resource. I now live in Charleston SC and unfortunately can’t find any local modeling groups (RC only). So I guess I will be hanging out here. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.
