HMS Sovereign of the Seas by Sjors - DeAgostini - 1:84

Recommended Posts

Thank you all,

@Anton,

Our SotS will be different.

You'rs are more historical correct then mine ( i think)

But she was to beautiful😏

Thank Bob an Mark...

@Denis,

thank you and i have chosen blue because i saw a scratch build on the internet with blue instead of black.

I just like that and do the same thing..

And also thank you Hennie.

Hi Sjors, different yes and historically accurate possibly to the same date as Van der Velde's sketch. Like all vessels these ships were in constant refit and modification was also suggested/happening throughout their life. So I can't say mine will be more accurate than this version. PS I do like the blue you've chosen 😊 Also the red stripe between the wales, does DeAgostini give much background to her paint scheme?

Hi Anton,

Yes, they give a schedule .......at the time that you don't need it!

In the start of the build they re saying make it black above the waterline.

I dont, i make it blue.

The railing should be sapelli stained, i make them black.

I,m now at the stage (80) that they tell me to paint the side of the railing gold.......

Nice when you are using stain.....

So i have an underground.

Same as the wales and other small beams that i have to attach now.

I found out that they are having a gold color.....

paint time again!

Super nice work on the decorations i.e. the ladies in the buff, the fix and the rest of your magnificent work.

Can't chat now, busy catching up with all the builds going on. Just want to let you know that I'm still around.

Cheers,

Piet, The Flying Dutchman.

So here I'am again.

It looks if I have done nothing but.....there are so many decoration that need to be painted.

And also all the beams that goes over the ship.

Between the beams there are coming also a lot of decorations .

But those has still be painted.Knight.thumb.jpg.ee6df942758a4e8340cbda2bc6973ca7.jpg58ea38006e47d_Afewmoredecorations.thumb.jpg.16c90c31a9da67dc92f58c09e74ad632.jpg58ea383336642_gunportdecorations.thumb.jpg.02afc3c20beb7565b3eec6467b7604e0.jpg58ea381fe4dae_Goldenbeams2.thumb.jpg.0de8320bcf5d66e129664c6ca0e81781.jpg58ea380c73823_Goldenbeamsstern.thumb.jpg.0f0214506bf1d23f596746a18cedaad0.jpg58ea38167bd86_Allthegoldenbeams.thumb.jpg.94633607962a1720b181f7a488af7da1.jpg

I'm feeling a little like Vincent van Gogh at the moment :P

But before you are thinking that I abandoned the model ,a few pictures.

Enjoy .

Wow Sjors! I definitely want to build this ship, thanks to you!!!.

Still undecided if the DeAgostini or the Sergal version.

Did you compare both? Why did you decided on the DeAgostini?

There aren't but two options: do it FAST, or do it RIGHT.

Thanks Ulises,

The main reason to choose for DeAgostini is because I could do it by prats work.

Every month I receive 4 magazines with building materials.

Nice reading things and I could spread out the money.

It's gonna be more expensive then when you pay at once for the kit but that was my decision.

Should I do it again?

No!

Reason?.....

The material ( wood ) is bad sometimes.

Change a lot of wood.

Bamboo for the planking is not that beautiful.

And because you are receiving each month something you have to follow there way of building.

It is difficult to look forward.

I have almost all the magazines and find out that I still need decorations to paint and placed when the shrouds are all reading attach at the ship.

Even with the ratlines !

So I'm happy that I still painting and nothing has done at the masts and all that funny stuff.

I know that another Dutch builder is building very soon at the SotS from Sergal.

By the time he will started ( I hope this weekeind ) I shall ask him.

Or watch for your self......

Sjors she's looking good my friend.

Hi ulises, I'm actually building the original Sergal version - not the mantua version but modified to match the Van der Velde sketch. A link is in my signature so you can see for yourself and compare. I'm only just started the second planking but should give you an idea of the kit at least.

very good progress Sjors.........don't you dare go in the closet!   I don't blame you for your thoughts on doing part work.........I find that with a kit,  some steps can be combined,  or would work better if the step before it was complete  {most of the time I wing it anyway ;) }.   the paint work looks really good so far......can't wait to see her when the painting is done :)

I posted this question in some other thread, but never got a satisfactory answer.

DeAgostini says their SotS is 1/84 and measures 1100mm, and Sergal says theirs is 1/78 and measures 1100mm...

Which is wrong?

TIA

I've taken measurements of my hull length (corrected hull length with the stern galleries overhang reduced) and that of the waterline and main gun deck and draught compared with that of the known measurements of the sovereign as built. These calculations show that both models are in fact 1/80th scale. The old once upon a time Amati kit that was produced is also at the same scale (though the most inaccurate hull lines available in plan form) can't comment on the part works kit but Sergals spar dimensions are also out. Not much but a noticeable difference.

Hi ,Sjors

I presume painting those decorations is not compatible with a previous "avondje in de kroeg" :D

Thanks for explaining the "Agostini"-approach although it makes me sad to learn that the quality of the supplied woods is even worse compared to what we are used to in many kits.

Kind regards

Christian

I think you did a great job. Looks beautifull. My SoS (Sergal) didn't arrive today:default_wallbash:They called me yesterday. It will take another 10 days till arrival (GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR....).

My bronze dolphins standard for my HMS Agamemnon also didnt arrive. Whats wrong with these webshops...? But the guy who called me, promissed me, he would send for FREE: a paint set..... and a glue set .....and a tool set. I almost said to him I would agree with another delay for more free stuff:D:D:D

Thank you all for the comment, likes and more of that funny stuff.....

@ Mathew,

There are 135 issues.

I'm now on 129 so 6 to go.

@ Pat,

It's gonna be an heavy model when finished :P

@ Christian,

I prefer a "avondje in de kroeg" then all that painting......

Now I can again see the difference between a kit and this.......

@ Piet,

Thank you !

@ Hennie,

Be happy that you are getting something when you are waiting....

I get nothing and I was waiting for one whole week between ordering and getting :D

But your kit wil also arriving one day.......

Wow... Sjors.  That's a lot of painting and it all looks good.   I'm surprised you're doing this by brush instead of spray can.   Wasa has a lot of carvings like that and I got lazy and used spray paint.
