Anna Maria 1694 by firdajan - FINISHED - CARD - 1:96

Recommended Posts

Dear friends,

At the end of the last year I was deciding, what a ship will be next. I put aside all my favorites ships, and try to find something, what I never built. Then I found some informations of the wreck of fluit, lying next to Dalaro - and I decided for this one.

Simplified history:

Anna Maria was built for consortium of 15 shipowners in Swenden for trading route to Portugal and back, trading iron, copper and wooden planks from north and salt and wine from Portugal. In the winter 1708 / 1709 the ship stayed locked in ice in Dalaro. The crew was sent home except 5 sailors, who had guard the vessel. At the evening of 6 th february, after supper, the crew left the ship, and very soon she catch the fire and sunk under the ice.
Shipwreck was found and identified by amateur divers in 60´ts.

I found plans on russian webpages, they were created by Cor Emke, Bussum Netherland. Dimensions are in Amsterdam feets, so it was very easy to transform it to 1:96 scale. I will using all my technologies as always. I started the build in march of this year, but I didn´t have time to publicate on several forums.

As 1st step, as always, I transform hull lines to 3d, create holes for strenghtening and strengh the frame by wooden bars. As you can see, I had to create two ribs which aren´t included in plans.
Next pics showing frame with horizontal ribs and decks.

Then I continued with second part of layer of the bottom part of planking using 5 mm strips of drawing paper, I glued them across the first layer. Third layer of planking followed and the upper part of planking. The upper part of planking I made from four parts, the curvature on the aft I had to make separately. I sanded each part of planking.

The final layer of planking followed - I used 4 mm strips of 0,5 mm cartoon - you can see it on the 1 st picture. Then I sanded it, smoothly putted and sanded it again - the hull was extremely solid and smooth.

I continued with clinker planking. I used 2,5 mm strips of 0,5 mm cartoon and glued them 0,5 mm each on another to make clinker effect. Then I colored it by red colour.  Then I glued the 1 st wale and some planks.

I continued with imitation of planking.I made it as always - using strips of foils ( after gluing of strips I´m using hairdryer to heat foil for better adherence ). The hull was " too shiny " , I patinated it to make a planking effect using aniline water colors. and colorless matt varnish. Then I painted bottom of the ship.

It looks like gunports are too close to watreline - but it si exactly based on plans.

Gratings you can see are laser cutted.

And... after several months I finally found a little time to continue on the model. I made some doors, keel and improved planking on the lower part of keel considering to plans and Ab´s instructions ( I´m consulting build with Ab Hoving ) . I believe I will have much more time next months.

Next pictures shows the ship today. I will continue with wales and some parts on decks.

Looking at the last pictures, one would never know this isn't wood.  I like the lines,  Obviously a large hold for the cargo which gives an interesting shape to the rest of the hull, especially at the stern.

Thank you a lot :)

Finally I made something on the ship. I started with the construction of the bow and cut out a piece of decoration. I also made  the windlass. I´m working slowly, but still  :)

Heloo my friends,

Don´t be afraid, I´m working slowly, but I´m working still  ;)  I made paper prisms 1 x 1,5 mm, impregned them by superglue and colored. Then I used them to make ribs - now I´m prepared to finish handrails. I also glued both sides of galion.

Thank you very much for your kind words :)

The handrail is finished. You can see the result on following pictures - I´m quite satisfied. Now I have to repaint the inner part of sides by matt uncolored paint to remove traces of glue and I can continue with the equipment of the maindeck.

Thank you, friends.

dgbot: I´m using Revell colors for plastic models.

Some details are added on the deck for the running rigging. I also made and glued channels.

This has been said before but... can't believe it's "just" paper!

For the record, the reason no one was on guard when the Anna Maria caught fire was quite specific: the drinks aboard were frozen solid so the last man left to join the others in the pub to warm himself with some of the still liquid variety. They were all awarded with a few days prison, after the shipowners asked the court to show leniency (makes me wonder if there were insurance frauds already then...).
